Odd considering Gateshead Central Taxis use it everyday for their deckers, and the current vehicles on the service are over 7.5 tonnes. Plus I've seen double deckers do full loops of the 93/94 for years, and that restriction on Stoneygate Bridge has been in place for god knows for how many years. Even when the 55 ran that saw deckers used from time to time.
However I suspected this might be the bridge, so I did a little research and according to Gateshead Council Traffic Regulations regarding weight restrictions.
43. Save as provided in Article 38, 42 and 44 of this Order no person shall cause any heavy commercial vehicle of over 3 tons unladen weight to proceed in the lengths of road specified in Schedule 15 to this Order.
44. Nothing in Article 43 of this Order shall apply to any stage carriage, scheduled express carriage, school bus or works bus.
