The only way it is an express is the fact it omits Gateshead interchange to save time (notice that the 27X gets 6 minutes to do Newcastle-Gateshead High Street where those service operating via the Interchange get 10 minutes).
It also doesn't serve any stops on Sunderland Road, as well as running limited stop between Heworth and Hebburn College calling at Pelaw shops only.
