Of course, before 1986 it was also subsidised, but as part of the overall financial support that Durham County Council paid the bus operators under a network wide grant.
Originally it was the 735 ,Seaham to Newcastle via Chester-le-street, northern chopped the Houghton to Seaham section off, and the local authority secured that section with a 148 service as you pointed out it was operated by Jc bell then Redby
