Don't believe there was any variant at the North Shields end, they both went via the college though and interworked with the 56 at one point though.
The variants were
57: Seghill -> Annitsford -> High Pit -> Cramlington (old 10/810)
57A: Seghill -> Fern Drive -> Dudley -> Cramlington (old 11/811)
Then they both changed into a 57
Then they split the 57/57A again, but this time the 57 going via East Cramlington and the 57A via Seghill, hence the evening one changing to a 57A.
Personally if I had my own way I'd restore the above aswell since the 19 covers the hospital and East Cramlington and Seghill and Fern Drive would be more worthwhile imo.
