I don't think there's any logic to the decision other than perhaps cost, but that's just speculation like everything else. One of life's great mysteries perhaps.
But you have to remember that isn't meant to happen... It's one of the reasons why the Centurion B10BLEs are being repainted.
The ex-MetroLINK Solars were originally destined to receive the same shade as the Tyne Tees Xpress, so if they were going to do that and they haven't done it on the Mercs... Means they've chosen to do it for a specific reason (it won't be down to cost if they were willing to have the Solars that colour) - only reason I can think of is to do with the livery designs being too similar and causing confusion in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Peterlee.
