I don't think they are that bad although I'd much sooner opt for the X2 or X21 although this is more for the faster journey time.
Durham - Chester, I can't imagine many having a preference.
Durham - Newcastle, the preference will be the X21 given the faster journey time.
Nowt to do with them not having any oomph though
