Of course at the moment, the inquiry into the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko opened this week and the blame for that pretty much lies at The Kremlin, so I suspect it is nothing more than Putin flexing his muscles...
I think the big problem in this instance is it interfered with Civil Aviation as it's transponders were turned off, even though the bombers at no point came into UK Sovereign Airspace, I am guessing this interception happened over International Waters
