I've had an Xperia Z1 for the past 18 months or so, and it's been rock solid. Does everything I need to do, and I wouldn't go back to an iPhone now. Never had difficulty finding a useful app for one thing or another on Android.
Completely agree here, my Z1 has been far better than I could have ever hoped for, and only stupidity on my part has slightly spoiled one of it's features.
The Xperia "Z" range is waterproof also, so if that's something you think you might find useful, it's a bonus. It's helpful when using your phone in the rain etc. as you don't need to worry about anything.
The Z3 compact is pretty much exactly the same, but a bit smaller, and cheaper obviously, so that may appeal if your budget doesn't stretch to the Z3.
If it helps, I had a HTC One X (and X+) for the years previous, and they were also very well built. I prefer the interface on the Sony though.
I know Dan (and others) will probably disagree, however I find the Samsung Galaxy range a bit too plasticy for the price, and they don't feel as well made as the Sony and HTC equivalents
