Might be best to leave the discussion about the Gateshead incident at that...

Will move to the "Bus Incidents" thread later if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Si1989
I'm sure there is a reason as to why they use the coaches tho is it not somthing to do with it being full size and manual! I remember reading sumit about it! Not to sure tho

I was told the reason that they use the current ex National Express coaches is:

  • They are to good to get rid of, although their life as National Express vehicles has now come to an end.
  • They are a pleasure to drive and comfortable which makes life a little easier for a trainee driver.
  • They have the crew seat at the front, so that the instructor can sit with the trainee and no vehicle modification is required. Vehicle modification would be needed on an ex service bus eg; Volvo Olympian Palatine 2s or Volvo B10BLE Wright Renown, to create a seat for the instructor at the front with the trainee driver.
  • They are also Automatic.

Hope this helps answer the question!

Mustn't have been able to shift everyone! Had expected additional buses would be required, as there's usually at least double the amount allocated last night.

Even the Metro couldn't cope. The queues allegedly stretched from Stadium of Light station to the back of Benfield Ford (on Newcastle Road). That must have been a few hundred alone, before we even consider what St Peter's was like.

(25 May 2015, 12:29 am)GMitchelhill wrote Since we are talking about buses struggling up steep banks. Shibdon Bank in Blaydon is a pretty nasty one, though nearby Birch Road is even worse.

Mind speaking of Fell Bank (My Auntie and Uncle actually live near the top of it in one of the bungerlows.), I remember going up it in Leyland Olympians (before the bypass was built) on the 551. One thing that could be said about the Cummins L10 / Voith combo is that they loved climbing hills, which is why the type was focused on Winlaton depot. (Though Metrobuses were based there (along with High Spen) when they were new)

Mind saying that, I believe Percy Main (and Wallsend) depot was never allocated Metrobuses either, but not sure if this was to do with the double bank between Wallsend (Church Bank) and Rosehill (Rosehill Bank), or just for the face that North Tyne depots didn't want them. Mind some have escaped onto the 301 (covering a breakdown), and Deptford examples used to escape onto their workings on the 310/319 (particularly Mk1 Metrobus 3516).

For a long time, VR's were used and operated via Birtley Lane and Lord Lawson.

When Portmeads Way was opened up on it's entirety, then they changed the route, so it went up Fell Bank.
Unfortunately, I never got to experience Fell Bank on a VR, heading up. Just a VR Metrobus heading down it.

yea it was on the local news a few days ago, taking out the bridge, flattening the land, and putting a bus stop there, and cant remember if its either putting lights there or zebra crossing there due to the cycle path (old railway line).

Yep. It was supposed to close the back end of lats year but it was postponed and this date was placed for the closure. The bridge is being demolished and as you say, they are placing a simple flat road straight across.

Just a quick question:

What is the difference between the X66 streetlites to the C&C and Red Kite examples? I ask because:

On the Red Kite and C&C vehicles, the buses only have 2 fuel filler caps (lower for AD Blue and upper for Diesel)

[Image: 17455591582_021ef679e0.jpg]Go North East: 5401 / NK15 ENO by Marcus (Green), on Flickr

and the X66 streetlites have 3 (again, one for AD Blue and one for Diesel plus one which appears to have a lock on it?)

I am aware that they are all Micro-Hybrids but couldn't help but wonder since one batch as an extra 'feature' compared to the other 2 batches.

citaro5284 explained this previously to tyresmoke - it relates to the re-fuelling system in place at Riverside.

This is just hidden away from the public eye on 5391 - 5394, as all the various holes in the bodywork don't look particularly attractive, as per the Scania L94 above.

Ah soz. Im not usually one for missing posts. Cant say the highwayman livery makes the solars look good anyway so it doesnt make too much of a difference.

Ginnan, Michael... Promoting our tickets - what's GNE paying you? Tongue

On another note, Chester-le-Street are currently loaning two vehicles to other depots (due to the lower number of double decks required with schools being off):
- Dennis Trident/East Lancs Lolyne 3864 (W864 PNL) is on loan to Deptford.
- Volvo B7TL/Plaxton President 6026 (V226 LGC) is on loan to Washington.
