Update on Central Station:

Tyne and Wear Metro

Central Station is closed and trains will not be stopping at this station until further notice. This is due to a fire alarm activation. Go North East are accepting Metro tickets on bus services 27 between Monument and Heworth. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

If GNE are only accepting tickets on the 27, its going to fun.....

Not sure why they changed their minds but:

Tyne and Wear Metro

Central Station has now re-opened following the earlier closure due to a fire alarm activation. Trains are running to all destinations with delays.

There are delays of up to 15 mins to trains running between South Hylton and Airport due to a fire alarm activation. Please leave extra time for your journey.

This is either the third activation of the fire alarm or its residual delays....

A map showing what I'm guessing was the original Tyne & Wear Metro network was on display at the National Railway Museum yesterday.

Slightly later than 1985. Palmersville opened to passengers on March 19th 1986.

Used to be a canny run all the way from Shiremoor to Benton without stopping, now we have 2 extra stops at Northumberland Park and Palmersville!

Aye, I remember. Nothing but fields between Benton and Shiremoor back then. There also used to be a goods yard with cranes at Benton, IIRC.

The extension to Sunderland wasn't made until 2002, hence it's absence, and the line from Bank Foot to Airport wasn't extended until 1991, so I'm going to guess between the dates MurdnunoC provides and 1991.

The South Shields extension had only opened a few years prior to that too.

Delays of 40 minutes this morning due to a failed train at Pallion. Second day in a row there has been issues - after an almost faultless summer.

A large number of people have been waiting 20+ mins and have seen Metros go past towards Airport out of service.

When a train eventually turns up, I perish the thought of what it's gonna be like... Comparable to Great North Run days, perhaps? #prayfordan

Go into Sunderland then get a train out.

Probably would have taken me more time (would have to get a 53 from here to Redheugh Bridge and a 49 from there to Bensham afterwards) than the 56 to Gateshead, by the time a train turned up. Plus, I don't think our staff passes are valid.

0638 train from Stadium of Light turned up at 0710, out of service.

0650 train turned up at about 0720, 30 mins late. At Heworth now and the delays are being extended even further as the driver is having to wait up to two minutes at each station to allow people to navigate their ways out of the maze of bodies.

Oh dear at least I'm at school so I don't need the metro.

It takes an absolute age to recover a broken down train on that part of the line. I don't know why they don't keep one of the shunters at Pelaw or something during the day, which would probably speed things up a bit.

Yep. That's how it was at the end of the 80s. When you could get a ticket from felling to monument for a whopping 10p.

Think he was being sarcastic, given that it has been a complete shambles today!

That said; depending on when the breakdown took place, they did seem to react fairly well to clear the train considering. I'm surprised it caused so much disruption though - why not just turn the trains at Park Lane or Millfield?

East Boldon closed due to a problem with the power supply. No bus replacement service running. More information to follow.

I've noticed the new announcements on the trains now state "Change for Whitley Bay via Wallsend", rather than "The Coast via Wallsend". In some ways, I think this is better, as "the coast" could also be associated with South Shields, not just the North Tyneside coast. However, I think that having done this, it would be useful if the countdowns at the stations could be altered to accommodate this change.
