North East Festival of Transport 2017

North East Festival of Transport 2017
North East Festival of Transport 2017
29th and 30th July 2017
@ Seaburn

Dates for the first North East Festival of Transport have been confirmed.

The weekend of 29 and 30 July 2017 will see the inaugural North East Festival of Transport taking place on Sunderland sea front. Entry forms are now available.

Being spearheaded by groups including the North East Bus Preservation Trust and Sunderland and District Classic Vehicle Society with support by Sunderland City Council, the event is set to bring together vintage buses, traction engines and commercial vehicles, classic cars and motorbikes at a prime location on Sunderland's award winning sea front.

The event is aiming to fulfil a long held wish of transport enthusiasts in the region to create a major showcase event, similar to those held in some other part of the country.

Interest among vintage vehicle owners is already high with hundreds of vehicles expected on the large and easily accessible show fields, within sight of Sunderland’s Blue Flag award winning beaches.

Sounds great (and a good opportunity for people to display their traction engines, since Sunderland Steam festival seems to fall prey too the elements all too easily, with the site becoming waterlogged) but I haven't the foggiest what I'll be doing more than 6 months from now!

Genuinely hope this works and helps break down some barriers and helps develop the scene further.

I have no idea what I am doing next weekend, never mind July.

The NNRG are working with the NEBPT on this venture. We think that's its important to showcase what we have in the North East. Every preserved bus that both Groups have on the road will be tuning out.

I for one am pushing like mad to promote this event and we are working very hard with The Washington Trust to make it as good as we can. We will be there for the 2 days with 4710 and 4855 hopefully getting joined by 4708 with the addition of 3501,6080,3656.

Hope to see you there.

Fantastic. Hopefully it is a good turnout, and something that can be built on year on year! Smile

Sadly a rally I'm avoiding. The huge crowds that the airshow attract will make it a no go for me. Just don't like the crowds, and the addition it will be difficult to get photos, and sometimes my paitence isn't of a saint.

Sunderland Airshow is on the 21st to 23rd July, which is a week before this event occurs, so you won't have any issues with huge crowds.

Ah it's a lot earlier this year for that event then. Going off last year, thought it would have been the same weekend. Mind still doesn't make a difference since I'm working that weekend anyway.

Nope. I've seen the odd person ask on social media, but the response seems to be "turn up and find out".

I am in two minds about going myself, as I found Durham and Whitley Bay to be so disappointing in terms of turnout.

Drove past and it looked empty. Hardly an vehicle's in attendance. I wouldn't pay in Sad

I would have thought, it would be busier tomorrow as I would have thought people would be more likely to attend on a Sunday as less people work Sundays than Saturdays. Apparently some buses that aren't there today will be in attendance tomorrow including gas Scania / E400 MMC demonstrator 80036 / DD16GAS. Don't think I'll bother myself tomorrow.

Quite frankly I found it very disappointing. I alighted from the E2 took a quick look and headed back into Sunderland. The NNRG vehicles looked excellent as always. Hopefully they'll be a better turnout on Sunday. Perhaps if the NEBPT organise such events they might like to bring some buses in future other than the static routemaster.

On a good note I got some good photos of coaches carrying Celtic fans and caught the gas double decker home. Five nil come on.

Yes, and I thought they'd have had a lot more of their own stuff there today. I know it is a 'See It Do It' event strictly speaking, but NEBPT seem to have been doing the pushing for it...

I was going to go along today, but I am glad I checked with others prior to setting off. I feel sorry for the owners that have went along today to be sat by themselves, and I do hope that more buses get along there tomorrow to support. Otherwise what was promised to be "what we've wanted for years", will have become the biggest flop in years.

I do appreciate that this was a 'transport' event and not a 'buses' event, but I hear the turnout was actually low across the board?

Just seen a photo on the NEBPT Facebook page for today and it looks very bare in terms of vehicle and spectator turnout, don't know what time the photo was taken but it looks a complete ghost town.

Today was much better than yesterday - plenty of spectators in the field and the heritage tours I saw were pretty full.  Could have done with more buses & other vehicles on display but hopefully the event will grow over time, if it continues.

Anyone know if EJR110W and SCN250S are working condition?  Haven't heard of them attending any of the rallies for a good while.

SCN250S was sold... last I heard it was in the Merseyside area. EJR110W is in THV's shed at Felling, but I believe there is quite a bit of work that needs doing on it?

RBZ 5459 should be able to expand on my vagueness. Smile

That's right Adrian. Hasn't been seen for quite a while SCN250S, but it is in storage somewhere in Merseyside after being sold - had some rather horrific blue seat trim fitted to it. Was a cracking Atlantean.

EJR110W is in storage at the back of the shed, looks in good nick but needs quite a bit of money spent on the underneath. It's owned by Trevor who owns Busways Dart 1723.
