I am guessing, although not 100% sure, that the last timetable re-cast has seen the Middlesbrough - Whitby trains run on to and off other services now, rather than seemingly operate as stand-alone services like they often did in the past.

As an example, the ex-Whitby arr Middlesbrough 1330, now appears to form the the 1335 to Hexham.
The arrival in to Middlesbrough at 1355 forms the 1400 to Whitby (appreciate timings may be slightly out, used approximation).

Obviously this helps if you want to get or avoid certain stock.

I've never noticed this before, but happy to stand corrected that it has been like this for a longer period than I thought.

I forgot to mention Northern were mentioned on Look North last week regarding the withdrawal of the pacers and how this may not be done as they have no replacements on order or sourced yet, it was also mentioned it would be illegal per new legislation coming into place for them to operate come 2020.

Having had a bit of think, unsure if they'll be available once the Azumas all enter service for LNER but what about shorter units of Class 43's or have the Class 43's on Cross Country with Voyagers moving over onto Northern Rail Services.

VTEC could always give the 43s to ScotRail, allowing Class 156s to move North...

•Voyagers are for long distance and are unsuitable for any northern service as there is no demand to match the costs.
ScotRail to gain to HSTs to Replace Class 156s.
Nope
The Class 156s are used on rural services and on the Glasgow-Carlisle-Newcastle service.
Once again these are barely full and Would be a waste to stick them on the existing Class 156 Services. My god

Northern have a large amount of trains on order, with some already in the UK. I don't know where their information is from? There's also a continuing fleet cascade programme which is going to push out the Pacers.

You're being optimistic with the introduction of the Azuma, it'll be long beyond 2020 when the HSTs are freed up.

It’s going to be mainly Class 156s but it may be on the odd time depending on working but they are mainly to be used on D.Coast,ECML&Tyne V routings

I'd had my suspicions for a few weeks, but having seen it a short while back - can confirm.

There's at least one 158 operating on the Saltburn line.

Next departure from Saltburn.

Didnt get id as saw it from afar, but it has some sort of vinyl wrap.

Edit: it's 158860

Certainly not unheard of on the Bishop - Saltburn line now, saw it myself heading to Bishop this morning but unable to ID, 156s are very common on there now

Heard and seen plenty 156's recently - but first time I've positively id'd a 158 on the line.

A nice change to them Pacer's!

142s are better than nowt... speaking of which, various services to/from Bishop Auckland have supposedly been cancelled today due to staff shortages, some services were cancelled on this line last Sunday for same reason, fear this is going to become a trend on weekends between Darlington and Bishop [emoji19]

The previously mentioned 158 was 158860

They're at Heaton for warm storage because there isn't enough room at Neville Hill, so essentially withdrawn following the arrival of the new 331s in the Leeds area, but can be used in emergency or during the leaf fall timetable

JM03   09 Dec 2019, 9:27 am
With the changes coming in next Sunday, all pacers will leave the NE and be swapped for 153 units transferred in only to be used in emergency situations

How true is this though surely there be extra 156 and 158s floating around Heaton to cover, honestly don't see how well a class 153 will cope in the north east routes. Plus our drivers would have to be trained again on them

Double 'em up?
Not a big fan of them personally, but the more stock the better imo.
Can't help thinking the 158's are wasted on the stop/start nature of the local routes and stop/start is certainly not what they were designed for.

Maybe the powers that be are anticipating future problems and feel the 153's are a decent option?

Was told off Northern conductor on my train Sunday night, seems pretty legit, Id not be surprised to be hooked up with 156s and 158s when not being used, they're only going to be operated in single units when no other units are able to operate
