September Service Changes
(25 Aug 2021, 1:52 pm)Keeiajs wrote I know the 62/62A have been introduced however i don't think it is long until the 62A is changed to the 63 and extended to Durham. As that service has seen the most "uproar". & 265/202/208 were the busiest indiGO services.

265 turned into a 65 with frequency doubled and bigger buses

202 covered by new 62

208 passengers will only have to change once from an hourly frequency to at least double frequency

I live in the east Durham area and I doubt that the 62A will be turned into a 63 and go to Durham, the 208 wasn’t pulling in enough customers to cover costs for an hourly daily service to Durham and can’t compete against Arriva 22/24, service 62 covers most the 202 and a added bonus extended to Sunderland , and don’t forget most of these Peterlee services were originally demmed un profitable by Arriva/United. GNE should be promoting the the connection part between 3 daily buses (55,X1) between Peterlee to Hetton Interchange and transfer to the half hourly service 65 to Durham, have to give Dan a Pat on his back about GNE with these bus changes, only other change I would do was put them in little purples brand and change the 3 digit system into a 2 digit system.

I liked the 3 digit system. However now just go to the 60.... And I think the 67/69 should be renumbered 47/48.

I mean if the 201/204/206/209/210 were re-numbered in the 60 digits they would have to.

I would change the 55 into a 36, so Gateshead area can use the number 55, and then the 35 and 36 can share most locations on route

I would aswell.

Speaking of renumbering, I'd say the Q3 could be renumbered given that in September there won't be a Q1 or 2 any more.

RE: September Service Changes
I do think renumbering only works when the new number isn’t already taken and is an easy swap. Taking the Peterlee locals into 6x series, would be confusing if you had to renumber the existing Gateshead 67/69, and it comes down to what’s in a number really?
I’d have certainly renumbered the 204 & Q3 in these changes, any random spare number would have done. Simply “3” might have worked for the Q3, but not sure on Arriva and Stagecoach routes around there. Number 18 for instance for the 204.

Are the 67/69 secured services? , just I’m not round that area.
So who’s doing the 204/204A now? Will it be ran from the 65 at Durham, or is Peterlee doing it as separate?

Both look like they are standalone. Could the 204/204A be ran out of Chester instead?

They aren’t in Durham at the same time. Only way to do it would be have the drivers come in on the 65 wait 25 minutes do the 204/204A then wait another 25 minutes for the following 65.

There is no route 3 for Stagecoach Newcastle or Arriva Northumbria, so the 3 would be suitable.

I'm not shocked either, I had an early finish from work today so spotted a SNS and it actually had someone on it!
Ooo Friend, Bus Friend.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's Consett over CLS, the Durham Cathedral buses are already ran by them so they must already have a way of getting drivers there, sure it won't be a big issue to have an extra one.

Surely the purpose of the service is important in this case, not the passenger numbers?

RE: September Service Changes
Im looking forward to the long walk from market street to the centre of town now the 28 isn't going to eldon square. Makes you winder why they didn't spend a few quid on the bus station at worsick street??

I suppose it depends on what you class as the centre of town, but lets put it into some perspective.

Geographically, Grainger Town is the centre of town, so buses terminating on Market Street actually take you closer. However, if you class Northumberland Street as the centre of town (which people tend to), then its 0.2mi or 5 minutes walk, according to Google.
That's roughly the same as alighting the bus in Eldon Square Bus Station and walking through the shopping centre to get to Northumberland Street. It's slightly shorter up the stairs adjacent to M&S, but arguably that'd be a physically tougher walk than from Market Street.

From a passenger experience perspective, then Eldon Square is the hands down winner, compared to a couple of bus stop flags on Market Street East. Likewise from a safety perspective, more vulnerable users would be better waiting in Eldon Square Bus Station, as Market Street East isn't exactly somewhere you'd want to be standing around at night.  Safety being a barrier to people using public transport.

While Eldon Square is not a old bus station, I think they need to build another one and move HayMarket over to Eldon Square. And a new 20 stand bus station bulit closer in the centre, it would be best for public transport and bus companies.

Personally I'd knock down the multistory car park between Haymarket and Eldon Square to open up space to build one City Bus Station for all services that serve both bus stations with the potential for NatEx/Megabus & Flixbus to serve it also.

As for replacing the multistory car park I'd use the opportunity to then set up the first of many proposed Park & Ride sites which would reduce emissions in this area of the city.

Surely they need to get Great Park P&R right first before opening new ones?

But doing that while it may be better in the long term, Haymarket is packed, Eldon Square is packed. Where are all those buses going to do, terminate at gateshead and offer a free bus to Eldon Square/Metro.
