Go North East: Service Suggestions v2

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
(05 Apr 2022, 4:01 pm)Storx wrote Ngl I was thinking the same thing but not sure there's the demand though. Mind I'd change it around so it's

X11 - Newcastle - Gateshead - Sunderland - Peterlee - Billingham - Middlesbrough - Whitby - Scarborough
X11A - Washington - Chester Le Street - Durham - Sedgefield - Stockton - Whitby - Scarborough

The Newcastle route there from Newcastle would take hours via Darlington and I can't see them using it anyway as they could just do X66/X67 -> X93 on Arriva Day Tickets. The route the X12 takes omitting Coxhoe is by far the most sensible route imo.

The X12 is worse as you'd have two X12's in Middlesbrough like.
Thats my bad,i keep thinking the X12 is still the X2

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
May as well axe every stop bar Gateshead Interchange, Washington and Whitby if "there's a train"...that only goes to Whitby via Middlesbrough. Scarborough is accessible via York by rail.

Perhaps the busiest days can have duplicate services registered to start from and call at different places en route.
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
Bit of an unusal idea that would replace the 701D and would also provide another express between Chester-Le-Street, Gateshead and Newcastle.

Reasoning:
CLS-NCL: 42 Minutes (Same as 21)
Direct Newcastle - Waldridge Park
701D Section Increased to 2bph (1x Clockwise, 1x Anticlockwise)

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
With Service Cuts seeming to becoming the new norm here in the North East I have had a look through the Go North East Network to see if some of services could be consolidated into others improving local services in terms of recovering passenger numbers following on from Covid-19, the method of consolidation worked in parts when Go North East had a massive shake up of it's services in 2006 and is clearly needed again some 16 years later given how much services have been chopped and changed. I guess I have done the same you say but in turn also provided a more stable network of services in the long term. I have spent quite a few hours over the past week working on these whilst also throwing in some throwback services of the late 80's/90's into the early 00's reinstating some long lost local links.

I agree with almost of all that, my biggest issue is the 60, I don't think it would be a good idea to extend it to South Shields, I think it would be better if the 27 is extended to Sunderland or just have it own route between South Shields and Sunderland

- I would have X56 go via A690, Follingsby, Heworth, Gateshead, Newcastle
- Every 10 mins to South Shields would be far to much. It would be best to have the 20 Operate an Every 10 mins service to Durham and every 20 mins to South Shields, or 60 Every 20 mins Extends to South Shields, or like the user above extend the 27 or 57,
- Extend the 62 upto Parkside and Also via Homeleside.
- X6/X7 - X6 - Sunderland - Doxford Park - Seaham Harbour - Dawdon - Murton - Peterlee (to provide some replacement for the 55 "quickness")
X7 - Sunderland - Seaham - Peterlee - Billingham - Stockton - Norton - Middlesbrough
- I would extend the 78 to Devel's every 30 mins.
- Introduce a X24 - Castleside, Consett - Auckland - Darlington.
- Would the 47 Still exist?
- X28 Not better Starting at Parkside to provide a easier link to the roads leading down to seaham like in the 90's & 80's
- X28 to rename it the X60.
- 29 extended to Stanley to replace the 8
- All the Newcastle services should go into Eldon Square.
- 65 Could possibly extend upto the Arnison Centre every 60 mins, with the X20 every 60 mins giving it a every 30 mins service.
- The other 65 & X20 terminating at Durham
Have you thought of any PVR's? Or Fleets?
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
(12 Apr 2022, 9:13 pm)Malarkey wrote With Service Cuts seeming to becoming the new norm here in the North East I have had a look through the Go North East Network to see if some of services could be consolidated into others improving local services in terms of recovering passenger numbers following on from Covid-19, the method of consolidation worked in parts when Go North East had a massive shake up of it's services in 2006 and is clearly needed again some 16 years later given how much services have been chopped and changed. I guess I have done the same you say but in turn also provided a more stable network of services in the long term. I have spent quite a few hours over the past week working on these whilst also throwing in some throwback services of the late 80's/90's into the early 00's reinstating some long lost local links.

21 – Howlands Park & Ride – Durham University - Durham - Framwellgate Moor - Arnison Centre - Plawsworth - Chester-le-Street - Birtley - Low Fell - Gateshead – Newcastle
• Section of route between Durham & Brandon replaced by the X22.
• Service extended via N21 Route to Durham University and further to Howlands Park & Ride
• Service 21 will continue to operate to current frequency for the runs which operate to Durham.

X22 – Newcastle – Gateshead – Low Fell – Chester-Le-Street – Durham – Langley Moor - Brandon – Brancepeth – Crook – Bishop Auckland – Staindrop – Barnard Castle
• New Service X22 will operate Hourly Monday to Sundays replacing the 21 runs to Brandon.
• The Service will be extended from Brandon to Barnard Castle via Crook and Bishop Auckland opening several new links.

X23 - Newcastle – Gateshead – Low Fell – Chester-Le-Street – Durham – Langley Moor - Brandon – Brancepeth – Crook – Bishop Auckland – Shildon – Aycliffe Village – Darlington
• New Service X23 will operate Hourly Monday to Sundays replacing the 21 runs to Brandon.
• The Service will be extended from Brandon to Darlington via Crook and Bishop Auckland opening several new links.

I like what you're going for here with the 21, X21, X22, X23 and while they would be great, I think perhaps a tad unrealistic, however I do think in an ideal world of joined up thinking, some tidying up of DCC contracts could occur here.

The 21, I think it would make more sense for it to run to Mount Oswald estate rather than the P&R, that way you can replace service 42.

I think the X22/23 although nice in theory would struggle in practice. GNE have already tried and failed in Darlington, can't see them going for that again, and you're never gonna compete with the train journey time wise. I'd say you could probs get away with the X23 as far as Crook, which I do think there would be scope for, competing against the X46.

As for the X22, I would say there would be scope if you entered into some sort of partnership with DCC. I would thus suggest it run from Brandon to Oakenshaw and then the route of the 108/9 into Bishop Auckland replacing that service. You could even then extend it to Toft Hill replacing the 87, emulating Arriva's previous service 50 which ran in 2012 to a similar route from Toft Hill to Durham.

As for the Barnard Castle stretch, I'd tack that on to the end of the X21, again in partnership with DCC, replacing Scarlet Band service 85. If you really wanted to, I suppose you could extend the other X21 to Darlington via the route of the 84 but I reckon that would be pushing it a bit. More realistically you could have the 84 Cockfield to Darlington merged with the 83 Cockfield to Barnard Castle.

What I will say tho is despite all being nice suggestions, realistically I think they'd be too long and you'd be having to look at splitting them in Durham, but then you're losing the appeal for passengers in Brandon and West Auckland who might go beyond Durham and could think they may as well get the more frequent 49 or 6 instead.

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
My suggestion for a revised service 4A/C and a service 3. Current service 4 heworth-houghton. Current service 35 thought Houghton-sunderland. Current service 9 route Sunderland-Jarrow. Then to hebburn, Lukes lane Estate and back to heworth as a loop. I've included a map to make it a bit clearer.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1...GEnuLosGsP&usp=sharing

I'd suggest operating the full loop on a half hourly basis as service 4/4a with a service 3 operating on a half hourly basis from heworth-sunderland via Houghton. This would give a combined PVR of 19. Interworking pattern would be 4A-4C-3-3

Service 9 could be withdrawn.
Service 35 could be withdrawn south of Sunderland with Houghton-Low moorsley replace by diverted service 55 which would no longer serve Peterlee.
Service 26 could be withdrawn past Jarrow. Service 27 could be rerouted in hebburn to reduce journey time to Newcastle.

There are a number of changes that could be made to other services based on this that I haven't listed.

I have created an example timetable below. I'm aware it is a very long route but the idea would be to connect local communities to key locations rather than long distance journeys. That said it would provide a number of locations with a direct bus to Amazon at Follingsby Park.

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
If GNE were ever to further scale back on North Tyneside, they could go for the following

41, 41A, 309, 310, 311, X39

Service 41 - Every 30 minutes
- No longer serves Hadrian Park during Monday to Saturday daytime, extended to Blyth via 309 route from Battle Hill.

Service 41A - Every 30 minutes
- No changes

Service X39
- Withdrawn

Service 309 (Current)
- Withdrawn

NEW Service 309 - Every 20 minutes
- Basically a renumbered 311 between Hadrian Park and Newcastle.

Service 310 - Every 20 minutes
- Same route as current 310 from North Shields to Norham Road North. Then via A191 New York Road through Cobalt Park before following almost the same route as current 309 to Newcastle with the exception of serving HIgh Farm rather than Selby Gardens.

Current PVRs
- 41/41A - 3x Single Deck
- 309/310/311 - 16x Double Deck

New PVRs
- 41/41A - 6x Single Deck
- 309/310 - 9x Double Deck

Note that 7x B9TL would be freed from Percy Main as only 11x would be required (PVR of 9x + 2x spare)

That 41 is a complete waste of time, no-one would use it especially since the 54 already does it mostly anyway. People from Blyth / South Beach don't all go to Cobalt and the 308 does the rest of the route cheaper and more frequently doesn't make sense and people from Wallsend use the 22. You're just inventing another 19 pretty much.

The 311 is the bus route that needs to go out of the lot.

I know what you mean about the 41, it would in theory only be a stop gap until BSIP implemented.

The 311 however, if they dropped it now and just ran the 310 through Hadrian Park, that would only reduce the PVR by 2x vehicles based on a 20 minute frequency of both the 309 & 310 (just under 13%) unless the 309 went standalone and did whacky races meaning the PVR could be 13x (just under 19%).

However, until BSIP is implemented, any reduction in frequency to the 309/310/311 during the day could cripple GNE in North Tyneside as Arriva (along with their strongholds) would then dominate with GNE being seen as the 'oddball' infrequent operator that punters would just let pass in favour of the 306 & 308. If Arriva reduced frequency on the 306 & 308 (not that they will as proven in March's changes), they've still got their traditional strongholds to rely on. Other than High Farm & to some extent Battle Hill, GNE don't really have much else significant to rely on without competing tooth and nail.

By the way, my original suggestion wasn't a suggestion as such, but more a 'what if?' if you know what I mean Smile. But it is a case of how long either operator are willing to hold out and who will be the first to crack and reduce frequency. In the past, I'd say Arriva but they're holding on and going by recent changes, I'd be inclined to say it would be GNE now the first to crack.

Yeah I know what you mean. I know this is never going to happen for obvious reasons but imo the best service to serve Hadrian Park would be the 22. Every 10 minutes is overkill to Cobalt so you could split them 20 / 20. One to Cobalt, one to Hadrian Park.

It then means you could possibly up the 309/310 back upto every 15 minutes both via High Farm and Battle Hill with the 306/308 both going via Station Road and the Coast Road

Would mean most the communities have a nice clean 7.5 minute service to all areas.

For the GNE ones though I'd probably do

309 - Every 15 minutes to Whitley Bay, every 30 minutes to Blyth
310 - Every 15 minutes to Silverlink, every 30 minutes via current route, every 30 minutes via 19 route until the tip then head through meadowell and rejoin the current route until North Shields every 15 minutes or so.
311 - Withdrawn
41 - Dropped to every 20 minutes all via Wiltshire Drive

SNE

22 - Every 20 minutes to Northumberland Park, 1 extended to Cramlington via 19 route hourly.
23 - Every 20 minutes to Hadrian Park

Nexus
19 - Withdrawn

Obviously it means working together though which won't even happen. Would sort most the Coast Road mess as they'd have their own corridors rather than the mismatch currently.

That seems a very sensible and logical idea to be fair like. Not sure about extending the 22 to Cramlington but reasoning behind it I suppose.

As for the Coast Road as you've mentioned before, taking the 306 out of Battle Hill and having all services running every 20 minutes each (every 5 combined) seems the more sensible idea

306: xx:00
310: xx:05
308: xx:10
309: xx:15

As for the 23 and Hadrian Park, although it seems a longer journey on paper, lets not forget it stops right in the heart of Newcastle so really, the journey time wouldn't be too disimilar to GNE's 57 & 58 when they served Hadrian Park.

Not sure I would drop them to 20 minutes me. Each of them are all doing different little things and I kinda believe they all deserve a 15 minute service. Not to mention you'd have problems with the 306 extension to Whitley and I do think the 309 would be better having 2 terminating at Whitley like they did for awhile.

Battle Hill / High Farm are probably busy enough to warrant a 7.5 minute service aswell tbh and I do believe Cobalt warrants a 15 minute service at the peaks (the X39 can be withdrawn).

I'm guessing it all depends on numbers though really. Could possibly make the 306/308 express from Station Road to the Civic Centre only stopping at Corner House and Cradlewell, would save it a few minutes going up and down the two junctions and give people further away a faster service. Then effectively it's just 2 totally different bus routes on the same road.

That's some detour!

Forgot to take Prudhoe out when amending another suggestion I had for the 48, I blame tiredness and lack of sleep the past few days.

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
Given the recent circumstances I'd go:

306/308/309/310 - Newcastle, Coast Road / Station Road:
- Mon to Sat daytime: Every 5 mins
- Eve: Every 10 mins
- Sun daytime: Every 7-8 mins

306/308 - Newcastle, Coast Road / Station Road, Willington Square, Silverlink, Norham Road, Billy Mill then to either Tynemouth or Blyth:
- Mon to Sat daytime: Every 10 mins
- Eve: Every 20 mins with 1x short 308 to Billy Mill
- Sun daytime: Every 15 mins

309/310 - Newcastle, Coast Road / Station Road, High Farm (309 re-routed), Battle Hill Drive then to either Cobalt & Blyth or North Shields:
- Mon to Sat daytime: Every 10 mins
- Eve: Every 20 mins with 1x short 309 to Northumberland Park
- Sun daytime: Every 15 mins

So Mon-Sat departures from Newcastle would be:
308: 00, 20, 40
309: 05, 25, 45
306: 10, 30, 50
310: 15, 35, 55

Evening departures from Newcastle would be:
308: 00 (Billy Mill only)
310: 10
308: 20
309: 30 (Northumberland Park only)
306: 40
309: 50

Sunday departures from Newcastle would be:
306: 05, 35
310: 13, 43
308: 20, 50
309: 28, 58

Also, although keep 306 & 308 at Stand L and 309 & 310 at Stand M, maybe take passenger barriers between the 2x stands down? That would make ot easier for passengers snd effectively create 1x large 'superstand' for the Coast Road.
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
Just ignore the number I've used but why not run this route with a baby solo it would also replace the TB29.
Hopefully the bridge isn't too narrow otherwise the timings don;t work at all.

Maybe something like this?

Green line is existing TB21/proposed 19, red line is what I'd do if the route through the hospital proves unsuitable for buses, then either approach Team Valley from the north, or using Lobley Hill Road to get onto Saltwell road (unfortunately means a lot of backtracking).

I'm racking my brains to think if the GNE mini link M'something' (M29?) or other in the late 80s/early 90s got through it.
I remember it going in to the Racecourse Estate and ending up on Saltwell Road/Belle Vue Bank and on to the QE. But can't remember if it doubled back on itself or continued through the hospital grounds. There may be a timetable in the bygone section.

Just ignore the fact that GNE has two 69' Plate Mercedes Sprinter 729/730 which are usally used on Deptford Staff Shuttle & Peterlee Shuttles

The M29 didnt serve Racecourse Estate, it was the 29 (North Rider Transport) and it doubled back on itself.

They should build a railway station there imo. Just a shame there's a capacity problems so they can't. Be quite popular imo with Bensham / Saltwell on one side and Team Valley on the other side for commuters.

Think it'd need to be near Low Fell RMT. Might work, even if peak only:

It might have been the M32. Just double checked. That was the number not the M29 that I thought initially.

I think the M32 came back in a revised form late 90s. But that omitted the Racecourse Estate completely.

It was the M33 initially. Then the M29 (and 29) at a later date.

A new link would be handy from Doxford park Morrisons via the new ryhope to Doxford park link road being built at present down to hopewood park hospital Seaham harbour and park side then perhaps up to Dalton park. Perhaps either a 40 or 63 for the route number

You could just start it at Sunderland, and terminate it at Dalton Park or extend the 62 to parkisde with the 63.

63 probs every 30 mins, 62 still every hour
