I think that GNE are in a perfect position buying the B9TL's for the 309 and more people will hopefully use it between Blyth and New York to Newcastle City Centre. The added bonus is that the 309's timetable could accomodate a full double decker and still make a seift and relatively quick journey, but Arriva's 308 can't do that and the odd time I've got the 308 home instead, it could only keep to time every now and then whilst making safe and relatively quick progress. Put it this way, if Arriva need to add a few more minutes to the 308 the next time they revise the buses, GNE with a bit of marketing luck, could boost the 309 passenger numbers of people travelling from between Blyth and New York to Newcastle and back.
The 58 city link needed bigger buses so they get versas :s smaller buses liked it when they had the mercedes on,
Should routes be served by vehicles sized to manage the maximum capacity, or should timetables be staggered according to demand throughout the day?
Whatever happened to DUPLICATEs? - you never see them nowadays whereas they used to be commonplace in the 1950s.
The demand from the shipyards (long gone) at starting and finishing times meant long queues for buses, but those days are over . . .

(21 Jan 2014, 9:19 pm)Bazza Houston it doesnt get packed anymore since the timetable changed reason why they got new vehicles was because the bendies were always tired and ended up broken down inside of the depot thus that is why an off route appearance used to come in e.g Crusader or Highwayman even the 12 plated Tyne Tees Express

I'm surprised that they've kept the 58 beyond Newcastle to Hadrian Park. One suggestion from me though would be to curtail the 58 at Eldon Square and have it running every 7-8 minutes during the day then every 15 minutes evemings and Sundays. Then between Haymarket and Hadrian Park, introduce a 15 minute (30 evenings and Sundays) service 305 operating the same route as the 309 to Battle Hill then into Hadrian Park. It would streamline the 3 services between Newcastle and Battle Hill with the exception of the Coast Road Rising Sun Pub and High Farm. It would form a 4-6 minute frequency between Battle Hill and Newcastle during the day then approximately every 15 minutes during the evening then approximately every 10 minutes on a Sunday daytime.
