Go North East: Major Service Changes July 2022

(30 Jun 2022, 6:17 pm)Washingtonian wrote That's interesting! Never realised they were planning on running a New Service 83 as there has been no mention of this anywhere to my knowledge. Can only assume this is a works service maybe? Will be interesting to see what route it takes. I think there is currently an 83A running pretty much the route mentioned in an earlier post on here.

It already exists the 83 here - https://bustimes.org/services/83a-hewort...-le-street

83 is a new Nexus secured service I understand, whereas 83A will be the existing one that GNE ran many years ago

Not sure what the point of it is mind since it only runs in one direction currently.

Nexus mention it in their article under the 82 section

New services 82/82A will provide links between Birtley and Barmston Court on a Monday to Saturday daytime, each operating on an hourly basis, providing a combined frequency of every 30 minutes. New service 83 will provide daily evening links between Galleries and Waterview Park.

Yes that is a bit odd. I would have thought an evening return journey might have been added maybe?

Thanks for that. Much appreciated! I must have missed that.

After reading that article I would have thought it would make more sense to extend the 81 to Waterview Park on an evening considering it is already going to serve there on a Sunday. Also I would assume the 83 will run off the 81 anyway

Nexus imply an 82 & 82A giving a 30 minute service Birtley-Galleries-Bramston Court

Nexus seem to have updated the details of their changes

"23 - This service is being withdrawn by Nexus as part of our wider plans based around a new service 82/82A and continuing to provide funding support for the service 25. The section of route between Birtley – Lansbury Drive – Wrekenton is to be replaced in part by service 82 (see service 82 in Go North East section). The 82 will now be complimented with the addition of new service 82A between Barley Mow (Garsdale/Dorset Avenue) and Birtley, offering a combined frequency every 30mins"

I think 82A should at least go to the galleries, 50/82/82A every 15 mins from Ayton & Lambton to the Galleries.

EDIT: I think the 82A is not running and TB14 is doing that bit.

imo the 25 should be scrapped and replaced by the 81 running all day and extended to Newcastle. It's a right mess the routes around there.

25 - Hourly by GNE
81 - Hourly by GNE in the evening and Sundays and extended to Sunderland only on a Sunday.
82 - Hourly by JH Coaches during the day

All over the place especially when it comes to tickets.

imo the following would be better:

77 - Washington to Stanley only additionally serving the 25 route between CLS - Vigo Lane and rejoining the route under the A1(M) then Picktree Lane South (Mon - Sat Day, Every 30 Minutes, Mon - Sat Evenings and Sun Hourly)
7 - Sunderland to Newcastle via 8 route Sunderland - Washington, 82 route to Portobello, 25 route after there to Newcastle (Mon - Sun Hourly)
8 - Sunderland to Birtley via 8 route Sunderland - Washington, then 82 route to Birtley (Mon - Sat Daytimes Hourly)

I dont actually get why the 82 isnt half hourly during the day given how busy the Birtley/Portobello/Ayton/Lambton/Galleries section can get.

RE: Go North East: Major Service Changes July 2022
I'm surprised during the changes that they didn't think of putting the 9 back to North Shields. Heard a few people at Jarrow complaining they wish the 9 went back to North Shields as it was always on time and quicker

Probably because it is contracted by Nexus the North Shields to Jarrow section and at present is doing perfectly well with the SNE 10/11 operating the route. No need for the 9 to be even considered

Tbh the 10/11 need to be replaced. I've never seen the 10/11 on time at all since it happened. Plus I feel sorry for the drivers that have to do South Shields to North Shields via every estate

We must be looking at different times that case as they always appear to be reliable timewise whenever I see them.

As the section is also contracted between Jarrow and Low Simonside I can see why the 10/11 extension was introduced, but with regards replacing back with the 9, I don't think there were many through passengers from North Shields towards Boldon and Sunderland.

Im suprised there hasn't been a full quicker contracted service from South Shields -Low Simonside- Jarrow - North Shields

You are brave ,,suggesting a reliable SNE service should be replaced with a GNE here today , gone tomorrow service!!!

Given the bids were only submitted earlier this week I am really impressed with the turnaround!

I hope GNE did well and retained most of the work!

I disagree.

If GNE have a shortage of drivers, then if say in the Stanley area to 30 and 31 go to Stanley buses and similarly with the V3 and V5 in Consett, does that not release drivers for the likes of X30, X31 and X45 where cancellations have been rife?

If some of the drivers need to be trained up for the big buses, then so be it.

Depends who get's them though. If it's PCL Travel / Rural Link / whatever name this week get them then they're in trouble. I'd take GCT over them in a heartbeat.

Surely those timetable are incorrect, if not the 82A seems a completely pointless service.

It's not even coordinated with the 82 - 82A leaves Barmston Court at 04 mins past, 82 at 09 mins past. And it's a similar gap from Birtley to Barmston Court too.

The 82A times on bustimes are clearly the wrong way round - the timetable headed "Columbia - Birtley" has the Birtley to Columbia times underneath and vice versa.

It would, but I wouldn't under-estimate the impact that the reduction in service levels on evenings and Sundays has.

Go North East has admirably added a lot of resource in this area, and night buses, over the course of the last 12 months. Martijn has been quite public in saying that these efforts were in a bid to re-build the night time economy.

These efforts, however admirable, have probably been quite pointless. Any growth in this area has probably come at the expense of daytime customers, when they have seen such a significant number of daytime cancellations as a result of the increase in driver requirements associated with doing this (and other factors such as staff sickness levels, driver retention rates, and the industry-wide shortage for bus and rail workers).

Most services are returning to their pre-pandemic evening/Sunday service levels from 24 July. This, paired with the reduction in driver requirements for the school holidays (even with the work Go North East has won back under contract to the local authority), will probably mean that there are few to no short-notice cancellations from this date.

I may of course eat my words in three weeks time, and I'm sure I'll be reminded...

Do you mean night services to Consett & Stanley such as the following as there's no 'actual' night buses:

- 47 2305 ex Newcastle
- X45 2335 ex Newcastle
- X72 2310 ex Newcastle
- X30 2325 ex Newcastle

If the X30 goes down to every 90 minutes, best option for departures would be:

Ex Stanley: 1930, 2030, 2200
Ex Newcastle: 2015, 2115, 2245

Then after 2100, PVR would drop to 1x. Okay, would lose a service after 11pm but later journeys in quite a few parts I assume would be covered by the 6, 97 and X72.

A departure from Newcastle at 2115 and 2245 would lessen the impact of a 90 minute service.

I’ll send you a tin of Alphabetti pasta shapes so your ready!!

Meanwhile, I’m sure we’re all off to peruse our 2019 timetables to compare evening and Sunday timetables, to check if they really have “reverted to pre pandemic levels”
