Aside from the fact the alternative route goes along the coast and could easily get potential for plenty of passengers from Durham/Rainton/Houghton going to the beach and the shows.

I say potential, because we're introducing it in the autumn, and cutting the service down because of "low passenger numbers" before the summer holidays.

The first suggestion was silly.

The second suggestion, extending an existing service beyond Sunderland to the Coast (like the 164 back in the day), was more sensible

Extending the X20 along the Coast is fantastical, but then suggesting that it's unfeasible as the 24 offers a more direct link between Sunderland and Shields, thus arguing against the initial premise of the suggestion is nonsensical.

The poster has undermined their own post.
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
It would be much easier to change the tickets instead, just saying so you could use a GNE service, then use a Stagecoach service without losing an arm and a leg if coming from outside of T&W
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
X50 Durham to South Shields. Every 30 minutes. PVR = 3. 1h 10m end to end.
Durham, Sacriston, Plawsworth, Chester le Street, Galleries, concord, Amazon, port of Tyne, South Shields.

See below for rough timings and proposed route with stops shown.

Well that didnt take long to come around, the change says temporarily but you can guarantee it will be permanent, can see the X20 citaros getting withdrawn too in the near future
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
Bit of brainstorming ideas to further my 61/61A/62/63/X63 post a few pages back (aware some of these I've already posted). Not sure how this'd affect a chronic driver shortage so assume this is in a world where that's been solved:
- 2/2A: Withdrawn between City Centre & Silksworth (see 42 and 43)
- 20/20A/X20: Keep upcoming September changes to 20/A. X20 runs limited stop throughout between Durham and Sunderland only, NOT via Rainton Bridge or Doxford Int (short services transferred to 55) with seasonal limited stop extension along coast to Shields. All three routes combine to give 10-minute departure interval from Durham and Sunderland.
- 24: Withdrawn (see 35/A)
- 33: Diverted via Royal Hospital, possible extension to Washington Galleries via Silksworth Road, Herrington, Shiney Row & Fatfield Road.
- 35/35A: Withdrawn north of Sunderland (see 42), instead re-instated back to Shields to replace 24. 35A runs half-hourly in the day to new route; As 35 to Sunderland, then as current 35A to Board Inn, then A690, High Lane, Newbottle, then as 35 to Houghton, then as current X20 to Rainton Bridge. 35 and 35A combine for a 15-minute frequency on common sections.
- 38: Withdrawn (see 42)
- 42: New route to "hoover up" the withdrawn sections of routes 2, 35 and 38 - serving Ryhope Road (full length) and Park Lane, rather than Toward Road.
- 43: Direct replacement for withdrawn section of 2A. Terminates in City Centre and ideally would interwork with 42.
- 55: Re-instated between South Hetton and Sunderland, via Doxford Int and Royal Hospital. Peak-time X55 serves Peterlee and Easington Village, then non-stop to Doxford Int (+ evening return).

X20 stops: South Shields Metro > All stops via B1344 and A183 to Souter Lighthouse > Marsden Primary School > Whitburn Library > Seaburn Morrisons > Roker Park > Harboru View/Pier View > National Glass Centre > Wheatsheaf (NB only)/St Peters Metro (SB only) > Fawcett St/John St > Vine Place/Holmeside > Park Lane > Sunderland College > Prospect Lidl > Board Inn > Houghton newbottle Street > Houghton Church > Belmont Dene Drive > Then as current X20
RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
A few ideas.

X1/X2.

Both services combine to make a 15 minute service. X1 Current route to Easington Lane. One Journey an hour continues to Peterlee.
X2 As X1 route to Washington then will operate non Stop to Dalton Park then one journey an hour continues via A19 to Hartlepool via Hart Village and Hart Station. Services to inter work at Eldon Square.

X6 Will operate half hourly between Sunderland and Peterlee. One journey an hour will continue to Hartlepool.

X7 Will return as hourly service between Sunderland and Middlesbrough. It will no longer serve Seaham though and will operate limited stop between Sunderland and Dalton Park then continues to Peterlee via A19. Will then operate via Old X9 route to Middlesbrough Bus Station.

X9/X10 X9 will return via New Route of Yarm into Stockton then operates non stop to Peterlee bus Station then via A19 to Heworth.
X10 will operate current route from Middlesbrough to Billingham then direct to Dalton Park and Newcastle.

21 22 Some 21 journeys renumbered to 22. Service 22 to operate via Harlow Green with all journeys terminating at Chester Le Street.
21 will continue to Durham but no longer runs to Brandon.
New service 68. This will run Half hourly between Brandon and Arnison Centre via North Road.

X21. All journeys to terminate at Bishop Auckland. It will now serve Angel of the North.
New Service X22. Will operate similar route as X21 but will then be non stop between Chester Le Street and Durham then limited stop between Durham and Bishop Auckland. From Bishop Auckland will run limited stop to Darlington.

X66 - will extend from Gateshead interchange to Heworth
New service X65 Will operate from Metrocentre to the Sage and Gateshead quayside ( if there is a suitable terminus there ).

New service 11 will inter work with service 10 but as fast links limited stop service. From Metro centre will operate to Gateshead Interchange instead of Newcastle.

Service X55. Will operate limited stop from Sunderland to Hartlepool via Doxford Park, Houghton Le Spring, Hetton, Easington Village, Peterlee, Hordon and Hartlepool.
Unlike the previous 55 this will be a limited stop express service and continuing to provide links.

RE: Go North East: Service Suggestions v2
A suggestion for the X10... Send it through Easington village via Hawthorn, can't imagine it would have too much of a time penalty as it's pretty much going the same way on a parallel A19. Going northbound you have the option to go straight up the A19 after the green, southbound you wouldn't need to double back to the A19 after Dalton Park.

Is it fucked, or is it doing better financially now than before?

And if it is 'doing better financially now than before', how sustainable will that be?

You've consolidated loads from two services in to one, lengthened the journey and eventually (I'll give you the lottery numbers on Saturday if you want), numbers will fall to a level that isn't financially sustainable - because the service doesn't meet their needs.

The link between Teesside and Tyneside will need improving and adapting in the future.

The Northern service of Newcastle -> Chester Le Street -> Durham -> Stockton -> Thornaby -> Middlesbrough should be the answer imo. Especially now that the XC trains are down to hourly so there's a free path. Would help the locals in Waldridge who have had their services pissed about more times than ever to get places aswell.

Believe it only takes 55 minutes that way rather than the 85 mins at best the current ways.

The Northern Connect network isn’t happening now - it was scrapped the moment Northern went over to Direct Operated Railway control.

Yeah your right, not sure why I added Connect there was just thinking of the route, amended the post so it's right. I do believe they were still trying to get the service beyond the takeover until it got blocked because of lack of paths.

If the 12 remains every 30 minutes, would this not be an option?

Services 10/10A:
- 10 every 30 minutes
- 10A runs the current 10B route every 30 minutes
- Every 15 combined

Service 11:
- Returns to near enough original route
- Every 30 minutes but timed at Blaydon for connections to Metrocentre via 10/10A
- Combines every 15 mins with service 12 between Blaydon and Newcastle

Service 12:
- Remains the same

Yeah, I prefer to drive all the way now as opposed to dump the car in Gateshead and get the X10. I'd consider something as fucked when I walk away as a regular customer.

Going to hourly is putting more money into the pockets of toll road operators TT2 and Autolink instead of GNE's.

I wonder if you are one of many, or just a few? I suppose only Go North East will have access to that level of information.

If the latter, and the service is performing better now than before by consolidating the majority of seven buses worth of passengers into four, then I can’t see the service changing back any time soon.

Surely losing a PVR of 3 shows GNE have/are losing passengers on that route

Unfortunately, the majority of people who I know who lived on the X10 route now prefer to drive all the way or get lifts due to the frequency reduction. It may perform better in Go North East's eyes, but it doesn't in those of current and former customers.

The X9 and X10 were one of the few routes I'd happily use as a car driver based on the cost, comfort, frequency and direct nature of the route.

A short wait at Gateshead Interchange, often no more than 15-20 minutes, was ideal. Same at other points on the route. Planning to connect with twice hourly buses was easier than once hourly. Now, it's not worth the time sacrifice to save those extra pounds.

Was the X9/X10 ever packed though?
I don't recall ever using it in the past and it being full, whereas now it's pretty much always been standing only whenever I've used it.
That implies to me that numbers are pretty similar they're just carrying them on less buses

It fluctuated a lot, some journeys both pre- and post-Covid were packed on deckers and coaches, others were quiet.

Whenever I used it from Middlesbrough / Newcastle there was atleast 30-40 people in a queue, then by the time it would leave most seats would be full.

But that was around 1pm and later

Pre Covid, the peak time ones were very busy; I've definitely done a couple journeys on the X10 and stood the whole way. Still seems busy now at times but not seen one quite that rammed.

Think I reported standing on it earlier this year.
Would have been a Saturday and before they consolidated both routes in to one.

I thought GNE had the following policies pre-covid for standing?

- No standing allowed on X9/X10

- Any X21 journeys with standees non-stop via Birtley rather than A1M

Saying that......not much different to Arriva who allow standing on the X15/X18/X20 with fast sections of road.
