I'm sorry but that is beyond pitiful, not to mention GNE normally covers certain arriva routes on Boxing Day. Not to mention the 60 is just turning around at Rhyope every hour, that is a joke.

GNE are covering 3 Arriva routes this year

Looking at the list, I'm assuming it's mostly being funded by Nexus I'd assume hence they're not crossing borders anywhere, hence nothing to Consett, Durham etc.
RE: Boxing Day buses
Is there any actual demand for more on Boxing Day?

There’s only Sunderland at home so no pressure on Newcastle.and our major shopping centres are car centric (Silverlink, Valley, Metro)

Metro can pick up the slack elsewhere
Wistfully stuck in the 90s

I have a feeling a lot of shops will be shut this year; M&S, John Lewis, Poundland, Sainsbury's, Home Bargains, Aldi, Iceland and Pets at Home have already announced their shut so it's right across the board where there's closures.

The boxing day sale has died for most people.

Other than John Lewis and possibly M&S, no one goes Black Friday shopping to Sainsbury's or Home Bargains, or any of them.

The 21 should be turned at birtley if that's the case or even better at kibblesworth so I could got for a pint on the fell or in town without paying a taxi driver enough for his  ext holiday in Florida!
RE: Boxing Day buses
Apparently no services are running into County Durham on Boxing Day. Only Nexus and Northumberland council are funding services.
Service 60 is only running between Sunderland Park Lane and Ryhope Village (Tyne and Wear boundary). No services 20 at all from Sunderland....

I think the extension in to Chester was done on a commercial basis, with the added convenience of driver changeovers taking place there.

Now the depot has gone, they can cut right down on that.

Timings I'd guess for that. It's takes 31 minutes to Birtley so it'd be a PVR of 3 either way. Might aswell spend the 14 minutes going to CLS instead of waiting around doing nothing.

Same for the 6 takes 45 minutes or so to Sunnyside so might aswell spend the extra 15 minutes off to Burnopfield - assuming that's a PVR 2.

The only one which is the 21 which is running to CLS. However 35 will interwork with the 60, and 35A will standalone.

It would be interesting to compare the PVR and timings to the 26 which used to run as far as Barley Mow.

Sure the PVR was two and the journey time between Gateshead and Barley Mow was 30mins.

Someone needs to dig out one of the old timetables!

Edit: https://northeastbuses.co.uk/bygone/item.php?id=1569

There's the 26 and it went via Jackson Street, High Street etc

Infact, I prefer GNE over SCNE/ANE and would always choose them.

Yes I do criticise GNE, but really if there anything to be positive about?

Yes, and there always will be unless we make Boxing Day like Christmas and New Years Day - a complete shutdown.

The likes of the Metrocentre and Eldon Square are still open, so there's hundreds of stores and their workforces that still need to get to and from work. Hopefully the severely limited services on offer still allow for that, because in some cases, a shift's wages won't even cover the taxi there and back. It's also a key day for the hospitality and leisure industry, as we already know, and again that relies on staff getting to/from work.

RE: Boxing Day buses
There's never been any boxing day buses in the Teesside area. You'd think they'd try at least some sort of service on the prime routes - presumably if there's a demand in Tyne and Wear, there should be in other urban areas?

You'd think the Stagecoach 36, 39, Arriva 63 and at least part of the X3 and X4 would be viable? Certainly before covid

Yes, even after Covid apparently Arriva have bounced back better than most (at least in this area)

I'd add in the 5 as potentially viable along with the 63 and X4, certainly if they could all be run from Redcar depot for that day.

There probably is a demand, but given that buses don't operate under any kind of universal service obligation, the 'why bother' attitude likely comes into play.

By the sounds of thing there's no boxing day services anywhere in the North East and it's being ran under subsidy by Nexus / Northumberland hence nothing going into Durham this year.

If it was commercial no way would the 20 and 60 not be running in full especially when there's a match on .

I always find it strange that GNE want people to take the bus, but then don't offer services when even if you have a car you want to take the bus so you can drink.

I feel quite bad for anyone without a car who want to go shopping or anything.
