Nicest GNE Route
Anyone has any routes which just have really nice views/sun rises and sets?

I used to love the X84/X85 getting it very earlier in the morning and late in the afternoon and seeing the sun come up and rise was a nice sight.
RE: Nicest GNE Route
47/47A is very nice to get a view down on everything heading towards Consett. the Red Kite Countryside is a very lovely and can can get good thrash if your lucky with a good driver. the X-Lines X5/X15/X71 are also good
RE: Nicest GNE Route
The 78 after Penshaw has some beautiful views when I was on it, on a double decker (when they were allocated on Saturdays).

Do you know anytimes/direction to get the best sunset views.

X72 is nice aswell - shame I have never got it through the sunset.

Well the X6/62/60 probs have some lovely views of Seaham Harbour on a morning aswell.

Watching the sun rise late in the afternoon would be quite spectacular I'd imagine.

309 on a morning coming from Blyth towards Whitley Bay will be a good bet. Particularly if you can time it right, as you come down the coast.

Other operator routes, could include the E1 or the X4.
Both operate along the coast and that's going to offer you the most uninterrupted views of a sunrise.

X21 might have some good ones, through Bishop Aukland going into Durham

I might try the sunset tomorrow

Not going to get much of a sunset early morning on the east coast, heading south.
Potential of a cracking sunrise though.

I would attempt it, but the first 309 is after sun rise. Maybe in the winter.

It's still going to be low. You might see some dolphins too.

Cracking sunset at Blackpool or generally anywhere on the west coast.

For me it's the 684 and 74, then maybe X45/X46 and possibly X70. The 42A used to be a nice route for scenery too. Definitely some nice scenery around Cobalt Business Park on the 309. Am I right in thinking a decker can't be put on the 74?

Agree with the 689. It's an excellent route and well worth doing.

Aside from that, I'd say anything over Hexham way. Most of the Tyne and Wear stuff is pretty standard of built up areas, apart from some short stretches.

Yes, I agree with that. The Western Gateshead routes can be quite nice if you ignore the built up areas
RE: Nicest GNE Route
Most of the Stanley and consett routes have some pretty stunning sections as, despite some run down towns, they are largely rural and hilly

The only clear rural run the x21 gets is between Middlestone Moor and Bishop, though the bridge at Croxdale is cute and sometimes has sheep.

The 59, on a Sunday, does a nice ramble. No big skies, but some lovely woodland. No chance of a sunrise and none of a sunset between March and November, though.

I don't really think any East Gateshead route is, 51 & 52. Especially

I would hate to be based at Gateshead it must be so boring in east Gateshead.

I was going purely off the route number.

But, for me, I do actually like the routes that go through some of the, not so nice, areas. It's always a surprise, you never know what you're going to see.

I can't remember what route it was on, but last year I was travelling on a route that goes through some 'iffy' estates, and two people got on, completely drunk, one was wearing a hideous bright red velour track suit. After about 5 minutes, they started having an argument over who was going to pay for the drugs when they get there. Anyway, after quite a bit of arguing, one of them storms off the bus and manages about 2 steps before falling over and down a small hill. Needless to say it was a struggle not breaking out in laughter.

As someone who grew up out in the sticks, I don't find any of GNE's 'rural' routes particularly nice. Once you've seen one field you've seen them all, it's just a bit boring.

I do quite like the motorway sections of the X21 and X10, if you sit backwards, you can just sit back and watch people in their cars. I've seen some /strange/ things going on...

Might not be a bad thing to try. Maybe on the Coast Road aswell.
RE: Nicest GNE Route
It’s not GNE but the Arriva services between Hartlepool and Durham can be quite nice going though some rural areas. That’s if you ignore the uncomfortable seats on the Enviros on 57/57A.

As for GNE though the 10 can be ok especially the parts around Hexham and Corbridge.
RE: Nicest GNE Route
I once found a £5 note on the 632 sometime in the mid to late '90s. That was the nicest route for me though probably not the nicest for the person who lost their money.

Finders keepers.

A decker was on the 684  today.

I'm sure I read at some point a decker can't be put on the 74.

The 689 might be a nice ride some time.
RE: Nicest GNE Route
Try the 688 between Allenheads and Hexham.

I took the route on Friday 29th April after walking from Castleside to Allenheads.

Nice views.

Decent walk that. How long did it take you? Presumably you took Waskerley Way then on through Rookhope and past the old abandoned mine?

Hike and a half that!

Tried planning in a less energetic trip, involving buses and pubs - but haven't quite cracked it.
