Blyth bus driver chased snowball youths with knife - BBC News

Got work with another company now and they are " fully aware" of his actions previously!

Would this not have been an agency / temp driver given that they were predominantly running the 351/359/335 workings and the GNE strike didn't end until the 2nd December 2023?

A fine and no sentence? Ridiculous if someone chased my little sister with a knife I'd be the one in jail.

There's a few things to take from this.

Firstly, it's concerning that someone with a recent conviction for carrying a bladed article, is potentially working for another bus operator. I'm all for rehabilitation of offenders, but I don't think being able to walk straight into a comparable role enforces for that, nor does the weak punishment handed down from the court. There's an epidemic of knife crime, so it's astonishing that a 'near miss' hasn't been dealt with accordingly.

Secondly, as the victim surcharge was paid to the security guard reporting, I'm presuming that none of the teenagers that were chased came forward to report anything or were caught up with by the Police. If that's the case, it wouldn't surprise me, but it's likely one of the many frustrations public workers have. If they're not getting pelted with snowballs in the snow, they're getting stones thrown at them and windows put out.

It doesn't excuse the drivers behaviour one bit, but more needs to be done to protect workers carrying out a job and providing a public service.

Lastly, and it follows on from the second point, but there needs to be a level of parental responsibility. I mentioned 'near miss' earlier, and that's because in the blink of an eye, this could be an absolute tragedy that we're talking about. Kids will get up to mischief, of course, but when they attack unsuspecting members of the public, it's always possible that one day they could pick the wrong target. I think the lack of Police is a factor here, but Police intervention should be the last resort; not the first.

I read it as they joined that operator before the conviction. In which case, they couldn't reject him solely on this incident as that would imply guilty until proven innocent.
