How does the East Gateshead Orbit interwork,do they both change in Newcastle,as ive only ever seen the 52 turn into the 51,but not the other way round

It seems they change number between Gateshead and Newcastle.

51 Newcastle - Gateshead 
52 Gateshead - Newcastle (so they change numbers in gateshead from what I can see)
