It's a contract stipulation, and originally part of the partner agreement that they would provide the audio files and imagery to be displayed.

Maybe the two journeys on that route I made last week (0948 from Park Lane on Monday and Friday if you want to know) I just got unlucky but there weren't any NSAs on them, the screen on the one on Friday had glitched and was stuck on the 'piece of cake' ad.

Overall, I like it but there's one thing that irritated me straight away, why is the upcoming stop bigger than the next stop?
Surely the next stop is more important than the one after?
Sure, it's in its own box at the top, but it's also quite small. I actually found it difficult to read from the back of a Versa.
I just feel like it could have easily been double the size without really impacting anything else

Perhaps a "time until" feature could cycle through the upcoming major destinations so it helps the majority of passengers, something like;
"Low Fell in 5 minutes" changing to
"Gateshead in 10 minutes", "Newcastle in 20 minutes" etc etc

Rather annoying.QuayCity Versa NL63 YAH is similar. 5382 where it will keep repeating the same announcement no matter what service its on at its starting point on the route.
The Angels used to do this years ago.
