RE: Nexus Tenders July 2026
(4 hours ago)stagecoachbusdepot wrote Unless I am reading it wrong, when you look at the contract award values compare to the estimated values on the Tender Notice, and indeed the total value (>£4m awarded compared to stated budget of <£3m) I'd say all of the operators appear to have factored in monumental fuel price hikes and then some (or Nexus were wildly inccurate in their estimates across the board, or have made a large error in one or other set of numbers).  From what I can see, the overall cost is >40% higher than the advertised Tender amount.  Which as I say unless I am missing something is pretty dubious process in terms of such a huge variance from the advertised amount; not to mention where have Nexus found the additional >£1m from to fund these inflated awards?

The L&G lot award values in particular are huge compared to the estimated amounts - in some cases almost quadruple.  Though all three lots awarded to L&G are for the exact same amount despite differnt underlying estimates so this may well be an error on Nexus' part.

The three contracts which encompass services 99 and 939 were part of a group bid (for a total of £97k), so Nexus has actually saved >£50k compared to what they currently pay for the same three contracts with Northstar and Go North East - suggests, if anything, that these contracts may have been under-priced (as bus operators work on much smaller margins than that!)

In most cases, other contracts are largely at the same prices as last year (or just a few % higher).

No operator looks to have factored in a price hike for diesel.

(Yesterday, 11:14 pm)Nerd4321 wrote Wow the July tenders are insane this year

They are as follows (standstill ends 18th May. Contracts signed earlier date by 5th June)

Gateshead Central Taxis, 29/90/92/R3/R4/R5/R6/37/319

L&G Coaches, 99/939

Go North East 51/52PM/67/69

Northstar 9/25/25A/10/11/12/24/26/49/49A/50/51/52AM/96/515/558/568/643

All in standstill which ends 18th May and earliest date which they will be signed is 5th June. Quite a big pick from Northstar and L&G winning stuff as well.

Yeah also Stagecoach won absolutely nothing in the tender

Sorry If I sound stupid. Would rather know than be dumb but for Northstar is that the South Tyneside routes 24/25/26/50 etc? As in the ones Go North East run? I take its a 1 trip sort of thing because thats a lot to take on if its the all day thing.

Again sorry If I sound stupid, never really know what the drill is with the tenders Smile

10/11 - Stagecoach South Shields
12/49/49A/51/52/67/69 - GNE Riverside
9/24/25/25A/26 - GNE Deptford
50 - GNE Washington

None of them are the full timetable, but not sure what they are. Assume some might be the full evening / Sunday timetable though.

How are group bids evaluated? Are they stress-tested for affordability?  Assume it's in the tender documents, but they arent on the links posted up the thread.

No doubt GNE can run those services commercially, all of a sudden.....
Ooo Friend, Bus Friend.

Ah thanks that makes sense and is just really shoddy accounting/transparency on find a tender then -

The estimated values for Lots 12, 18 & 19 total £119,084 - https://www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/N...rchResults&p=3

The issue is the award notice wording identifies each lot as a separate contract and gives the total aggregated value against each contract.  Given they already have lot numbers and contract numbers for each service, seems mad they then give them further separate contract numbers and give the full "group bid" value for all three awarded contracts without any indication that they are linked.  Giving "contract value" under each separate contract strongly (wrongly) implies that is the value for that particular contract! https://www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/N...rchResults&p=3

Contract 12
Lots
Lot 12. Contract 1186 (Service 99)
Supplier Contract value
  • £97,530 excluding VAT
  • £117,036 including VAT

Contract 17
Lots
Lot 17. Contract 1192 (Service 939 Contract 1)
Supplier Contract value
  • £97,530 excluding VAT
  • £117,036 including VAT

Contract 18
Lots
Lot 18. Contract 1193 (Service 939 Contract 2)
Supplier Contract value
  • £97,530 excluding VAT
  • £117,036 including VAT

Obviously I dont know what they currently pay for these three contracts but can see this comes out at basically the same value as the estimated value £117k inc VAT actual cf. £119k inc. VAT estimate, so minor £2k saving on budgeted amount there.  Presume the same applies to other contracts explaining the discrepancy in totals.

I think the 50 is just the evening services to/from Chester-le-Street? That's at least what it has been in the past. Like you, I presume some of this, such as the 49/49A/51/52 are the ridiculously early trips on the timetables.

Nexus should really return to marking supported trips in the timetables they produce, as they did in the early 00s.
