Arriva North East: Latest News & Discussion - May 2014

RE: Arriva North East - Latest
I wouldn't have thought so but it would be interesting to know? My understanding is that it is funded through North Yorkshire County Council, possibility some sort of umbrella partnership that seem to have a hand in most Dalesbus activity?
What does intrigue me is just how they knew to provide the extra vehicle ? And what worries me, like a lot of these type of services, just how
sustainable is it, given that a lot, and no
disrespect here, a lot of its passengers will be
using free concessionary passes. Look what
happened with Moorsbus?

(05 May 2014, 8:13 pm)G-CPTN wrote I don't think there is the possibility for trucks not to use tachographs.

The concession simply applies to service buses operating a route up to 50kms

Once a driver has driven a vehicle that requires a tachograph, that driver has to keep a record of their duty and rest periods for the rest of the working week.
They also have to keep a record of duty and rest periods during their working week before they drive a tachograph vehicle though non-tachograph duty is classed as 'other work' rather than 'driving'.

The driver also has to be able to account for the previous 28 days if there is any week that includes tachograph duty!

Rules on Drivers’ Hours and Tachographs.

Basically its typical EU bureacratic rubbish. Yet the EU can't even get its own accounts audited!

Good to know some Council's have money to burn, while others can't even afford any early morning contracts.
RE: Arriva North East - Latest
Any reason why Arriva are ordering Streetlite's now and not Pulsars since the seating capacity is roughly similar (on the Max version)

(05 May 2014, 9:07 pm)citaro5284 wrote I can understand the rule for long distance touring to ensure drivers have enough rest, but what is the difference between a driver going to Carlisle and back and a driver operating the 308's for 4 hours plus?

Both have a duty board showing exactly what they should be doing, the duties will be on a rota whereby the daily and weekly rest will be shown, so why should the driver of the 685 be under different regulations just because he is going more than 50km?

Totally agree. A load of nonsense.

Because the SB200 chassis upon which the Pulsar body is built on is no-longer in production at Euro6.

No Tom, just Euro6.

Make's sense Smile

(05 May 2014, 10:31 pm)G-CPTN wrote You are getting too complex for me - only those like yourself who actually have to comply will know what is required.

I've been wondering how a minibus driver can work 11 hours per day (9 hours driving with a 2 hour break midday) for six days on consecutive weeks - 54 hours driving - should be no more than 90 hours over two weeks . . .

While a taxi driver (or indeed a private car driver) is totally unrestricted!

What's that - the Arriva page?

He wouldn't dare ban you - get the Gazette onto him.

That's as far as I'm going Roland? Have written the letter, ripped it up and binned it! Not going to solve anything. I'll keep my eyes on them over the summer.

(06 May 2014, 6:03 pm)robisdave15 wrote Yep, I just took a look this morning but like Tyresmoke said it's a waste of space as its run by Customer Services and besides that I'm banned!

Me too, they're an absolute joke. Bus & Coach Council briefly got me un-banned then they banned me again!

Better off writing to VOSA!

(06 May 2014, 6:22 pm)Roland Pratt wrote They've got these in M'bro bus station today. Rather confusing for the average user I would think with the summer timetable and winter all combined in the one timetable.

Less confusing in that it doesn't change times of the through journeys every 6 months! Its not that difficult to read in my opinion.

I personally think that X93 timetable actually stands some chance of working, providing the B7's are up to it.

I think you should have sent it. You have a right, as a passenger, to air your issues directly. The issues are also valid.

The more pressure that is put on the company, the more likely something will happen at Redcar and some changes will be enforced.

After all, whilst he may be the MD, I very much doubt he is aware of every single ongoing issue.

Does is still have the X93 branding?
RE: Arriva North East - Latest
Looks like a bit of thought has gone into the new timetable for the X93? The issue over stock to use is in the hands of the B7's which given the timings have now been relaxed should be able to cope. The issue of not having spare vehicles and maintainance facilities closer to the route, particularly at the Scarborough end remains but much else is out of Arrivas hands ; traffic, weather, roadworks and such like.
I gave them grief yesterday but perhaps they simply didn't expect the world and his friend to want to go to Whitby? My case, for now at least, is closed.

I've long been mystified about how Arriva runs the X93. At least they have solved the capacity issue (sort of) but surely someone there can check the weather forecasts and it is not beyond the wit of man to expect the world and his wife to travel to Whitby and Scarborough on a bank holiday weekend when the weather is fine, and try to anticipate demand accordingly....
RE: Arriva North East - Latest
Herein lies part of the problem? A) we suffer down this coast with such variable weather and B) on a weekend/Bank Holiday there isn't much in the way of 'management' regulating services; we live, sadly, in a world of limited resources and variable factors, for example if it had been raining yesterday 4655 would have coped and if we hadn't opted to try for Whitby I'd have been none the wiser!! I'm nit excusing them, just trying to see the bigger picture.

The bus usage in Hong Kong rockets when it rains so much that the traffic gets gridlocked (extra buses to cope with the demand).

Logical really - if it's fine weather folk will walk, when it rains they take the bus (or the tram).
RE: Arriva North East - Latest
All that about tachos, drivers hours and what have you made for interesting reading? What is moreso interesting is the work of them that plan the rotas, allocate vehicles and what have you? It must be an absolute nightmare given now the economic times we live in, various rules and other constraints? Clearly in this techological surely there must be some software that helps in this process? Don't know as anyone wants to feedback on this?

It's not a problem that is unique to ANE as the same thing happens with Northern Rail. The units they use can't cope with the loadings as soon as the sun comes out, passengers are frequently left behind, indeed there are instances where they have had to provide rail replacement coaches from/to Redcar and Saltburn to alleviate overcrowding. Of course they're in more of a fixed position in that they can't do anything about it.

I was worried about potential overloading on the X4s as soon as they start to grow so it will be interesting to see how that route does, alongside the long discussed issues with the X93. Ultimately there is a common denominator across the two, though!

Not sure if it's been noted already or not, but ex-Classic 2503 has been repainted into corporate livery.
