Compared to now. You've got 6 2A/2C buses to Sunderland an hour, and 2 8's in addition. A total of 8 an hour. Newcastle has 6 X1's an hour. I wouldn't say removal of choice for the addition of one bus an hour each way is an improvement?
And you have the 73 also, but yeah looking at that there isn't much of an improvement, tbf though I forgot about most of those services mentioned i.e. 186 it's been that long.
