RE: Go North East: Latest News & Discussion - March 2016
Roman Wall bus gears up for another four years - click to read.
One negative - the Tourist Information Office (shown in the photograph), currently located in the Wentworth carpark (where the majority of visitors to Hexham arrive) is going to be moved into the Queens Hall on Beaumont Street (where the library is).
IMO this will be the end of the Tourist Information (at least WRT number of visits).
Nothing to do with the AD122 bus, of course, other than reducing the publicity.
Maybe (when the new bus station opens) GNE (together with the National Park Authority) will display publicity material - though, of course, the new bus station will no longer be in the centre of Hexham.
Hexham's decline as a Market Town began when the Auction Mart was moved out of the centre of town. In those days the farmers' wives were dumped in town to do their shopping (on market day). Now there is Tesco and ALDI 'out of town' and these wives don't need to visit the town centre. Even the Tuesday market is a shadow of its former self and the Farmers' Market events are now monthly on Saturdays.
Sorry for the thread drift - but the news for the Hadrian's Wall Bus is good news (for GNE and for visitors to the Wall).
