Simplified Fares for Young People, Students & Apprentices - from 24th August 2016
I am writing to advise you of improvements we’re making to fares for young people and students that will apply across the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area on Go North East services.
From 24th August we are offering the following to young people and those in full time education of any age, including those on recognised apprentice schemes:
• A simple £1 single fare for all aged 18 & under across the NECA area, whatever the place, time or day of travel. A small number of exceptions do apply.
• The ability for parents to purchase tickets on their mobile and gift it to their child’s mobile instantly or in advance.
• Our day ticket price, which covers the entire NECA area, is frozen at £3.75 and our weekly and monthly ticket prices are simplified.
• Everyone in full time education regardless of age is eligible for our day, week and monthly student tickets, so if you’re still learning you’re still saving.
• Student tickets available to those on apprenticeships in response to the growing numbers of people on these government supported schemes.
After five years of having the key smartcard for young people, our research and experience is showing that young people in particular do not want to carry around additional cards. Therefore we are giving people the option of purchasing tickets via our mobile phone app, in addition to online and on the bus.
There will be instances where it is necessary for someone to prove their entitlement to these discounts. In this circumstance, we will simply ask for any form of age or student identification issued by recognised third parties such as universities and student unions. We are taking a more consumer and retail approach to such matters as part of these changes.
There are also a small number of exceptions to our £1 any journey anytime ticket on some bespoke services where the cost of operation is higher such as night buses, special event services and a small number of dedicated school bus services.
Full details of our prices are shown below. A communication and advertising campaign is planned to support these changes and the benefits and simplicity they offer.
We believe that we have one of the simplest and most value for money ticketing schemes of any bus company in the UK with this scheme.
Yours sincerely
