I was at a meeting recently when the ticket acceptance was discussed.
Whilst a positive for passengers in this case, it clearly evidences the points raised about the lack of competition in those areas.
Passengers get a DB operated train or a DB owned bus.
Looking at the options on the Northern website, you can see that in the majority of cases where there's no Arriva bus service, Northern are offering a rail replacement or have some sort of train service.
