If you can get further west towards Newton Stewart and Stranraer, I would recommend it.
Then, there is the opportunity to head north towards Ayr, Irvine and Troon - continue north to Glasgow via the Clyde coast and Greenock or inland to Glasgow via Kilmarnock.
I'd recommend the former, despite it taking longer.
If you're feeling even braver, cross the water at Gourock and try some of the West Coast Motors stuff around Dunoon/towards Loch Fyne and then a Citylink back towards Glasgow.
