Think the initial extension was made to keep a bus busy in between scholars. X5/X15 extension doesn't carry that many in all honesty (from my observation anyway).
Aside from the through connections to Durham, the services were a good choice due to their separate service numbers making it easier to distinguish the clockwise and anti clockwise journeys.
