Drivers don't like it for the reasons CookieMonster mentioned earlier. There is very little benefit of having route numbers on the offside. Best practice is for it to be on the near side where people can see it clearly, especially if they're waiting on a busy road with lots of buses.
It's easier to miss that smaller suffix letter, as it blends in with the destination (they're roughly the same size). It could easily mean that someone waiting in Newcastle thinks they're getting on the 28 to go down Old Durham Road, but end up on the 28A! Now, that is going to be annoying for the passenger, they're probably won't want to use the bus again after having to catch 2/3 different buses because the letter was too small.
