I could walk from Ashington to Newcastle and have lunch before that would get there. X-Lines services are, according to the marketing anyway, meant to be "rapid and direct". 

Realistically in areas like North Tyneside there's not going to be huge potential for an express service, buses in those sorts of areas need to be picking folk up to make it work. There will always be exceptions, like the express commuter services to Cobalt, but in densely populated areas on the outskirt of Newcastle I don't see huge scope for express work. I'm aware there are the Stagecoach ones to the west of the city, but they have no real competition like you do to the east with the Metro. If you were to do a similar one to, say Whitley Bay, you'd be looking at running a bus non stop along all of the coast road to serve a town which has a Metro station - who's going to use that?
