A bus taking people to places they need to be is probably going to have more bums on it, than a bus that doesn't.

Realistically it's costing them nowt extra to add a bit of humour, and if it doesn't work then there's no loss

And to be fair that might attract more passengers rather than all these different brands. I could see kids loving that.
They did that with the Red Kites and it was horrifying!
