I don't get the example about Ashington to North Shields either.
Blyth, Ashington and the rest of SE Northumberland is in the Newcastle + North Tyneside zone aswell so anyone wanting a day ticket in either of those would arguably be better off getting that ticket even known it's not in either. Not sure why anyone would need anything else in either area I can't imagine there's many people from South Beach or Blyth travelling South of the river and there's no sensible route using any other bus up from Ashington where you'd need anything else.
If I lived in Blyth, I wouldn't expect a North Tyneside ticket to be valid so it's £6 to Newcastle looking at that.
