A better question to ponder is why were these routes amalgamated?
As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the decision to extend the 20 to South Shields in lieu of the existing 35 was mooted in at least a couple of consultations with respondents rejecting the change citing, if I recall correctly, that links would be lost between South Shields and Sunderland Royal Hospital. GNE eventually pushed ahead with the change and the 20 extended to South Shields with the 35 replacing the 26 between Sunderland and Boldon after a number of changes in between (can't remember the exact timeline).
Because of congestion in Durham and the A690 in general, I imagine the headway on the South Shields to Sunderland section has become unreliable. Therefore it makes perfect sense to split the service to maintain reliability.
