I live in Murton and don't understand any of the logic in that.
Probably less than you think given the bus will have "Peterlee" on the front.
Yes the blind will say Peterlee but some - older folk or perhaps college kids even - may not pay too much attention to that such detail. And I’ve lost count the amount of times buses get stopped at Dalton Park asking which way they’re going. I also seen a 61 change the blind early so was saying “Sunderland” when they’re actually heading into Murton first, only just a few weeks back.
The main point here though, away from the potential confusion depending on your point of view, is that the route just makes no logic.

And have the 61A on a weekend be called the 61B
The 61 should have been left as is, on whatever frequency - 20 or 30 minutes. Then the 62 (which I’ve coincidentally just seen around 11am heading out of Murton towards Sunderland with a pretty decent passenger load) should have been kept as is.
South Hetton are going from a 42 minute to Sunderland on the 55 or the 62 route which takes 50 minutes giving three buses an hour to Sunderland vs now a 60 minute journey on the 61 giving just one bus an hour, including a soul destroying 15 minute detour to every street in Murton.
