There isn't much in it for single fares (apart from for longer journeys like Whitley Bay/Blyth to Newcastle), where GNE are cheaper), so I usually just get the first bus that comes. 

Arriva are cheaper for day/week tickets. £3.90/£13.50 on Arriva for the 306/308, compared to £4.50/£17 on the 309/310/311.
