You can still get them with seats under the stairs, usually on the BYD / ADL Enviro 400EV City vehicles.
Anyway if you want unusual interior design try this - https://www.flickr.com/photos/gjm-photog...9427509076
And going back to the 80s - https://www.flickr.com/photos/gjm-photog...2011343586
And with Nottingham City Transport own designs, they tried to fit seats in any direction possible.

Stagecoach even had seats on the turntable on some of their Bendy Coaches - https://www.flickr.com/photos/gjm-photog...9487580631
In some European countries you had to contend with this...

I also travelled on a bus from Cyprus at the South Yorkshire Bus Musuem which had an interior with seats in the middle where the central aisle would be....

Never realised that the seat under the stairs was standard, always thought it was an extra, learnt something new today.
Mind there's some nasty layouts there, especially the Nottingham DD's, the sidewards seats at the top upstairs would be unpleasant as if it suddenly breaked and you weren't paying attention you could easily end up into the window.
Mind some of them remind me of the ex. Arriva London Txxx FGN ALX 400's which had the stairs in the middle aligned to the back door and longtunial seating downstairs. Absolutely hopeless for pensioners when they ended up here. Glad they scrapped that idea down there.
