Don't disagree though to be fair. If you ever had a contactless option which actually works you could probably make a case for having the singles working like that then having the cap using the zones.
Would help the outliers like you mentioned there. I know Northumberland Park to Whitley Bay is a problem one aswell.
I believe it was in the mid 00's that this A,B,C zones crap came into force, but back in my youth i remember my "dad" (if he even deserves that title) having to state the zone number on the bus if it was a transfer
