I would take a wild guess & assume it was via Middleton-in-Teesdale & Barnard Castle then onto Darlington as per the current X75.
It would be nice to have those kinds of links reintroduced, although unfortunately there wouldn't be enough people to justify such a service, especially when a lot more people in the rural areas use their cars for the convenience opposed to a once or twice a day bus service...
The Alston extension was a summer Sunday addition and only operated a couple of years, having previously only ran up to Langdon Beck. And yes it was the current X75 route then up through Middleton and High Force. Realistically there isn’t the demand for buses East of Alston through to Weardale or Teesdale, there’s barely the demand for a daily service through to the nearest major towns.
