If you don't, there will be all sorts of random info floating about, which for someone catching up - is going to be hard to read or keep on top of.

I really don't think there's a great deal of posts in the threads at present, so couldn't imagine it to be a problem.

Yup! The Yorkshire Thread is a good example; although it's seemingly acting as a source of information rather than a place of discussion, I still think it's working well and serving its purpose.
