As far as students go, they're always on the train and can use their railcard. Even in a taxi, a group of people would make it cheaper than the bus.
Business people, whatever is the quickest and easiest.
I think they do work to a degree because Newcastle is one of the only airports in the country that doesn't have a regular scheduled coach service to anywhere (aside the odd National Express which is on request only)
I know it has the Metro which probably makes it a bit more difficult.
But whether they will work at an airport that's business is predominantly leisure bucket and spade is probably a good question
