Exactly the sort of the thing they can do on some services they decide to have nowt to do with on an evening or night.
Unless of course, the margin percentages aren't good enough, they can reduce costs or they don't have the staff to drive the vehicles?

My point was that operators up and down the country self-subsidise the quiet runs throughout the day by picking up the revenue on the return journey or during the peak period.

If they do this during the day and a little way into the evening too, they're in no position to continue doing that all night, if they want to make as much profit as they do now to re-invest back into the fleet to provide higher quality vehicles for passengers.

As I've said previously - if passengers aren't fussed about having newer, more reliable vehicles, which are fitted with Wi-Fi and power sockets, then I'm sure bus operators could self-subsidise all night long too.
