As you can imagine, the cost is prohibitive - the advantages have got to outweigh the disadvantages (ie initial cost).
Suppose that would have to happen in a few years. I think Hexham will need replaced too, but obviously not merged with anything.
Imagine having to learn all the routes for Washington, Stanley and Chester-le-Street though!!
