The terminals were kept, but the barriers never seemed operational.
I believe it was due to concerns over safety arising from a series of incidents on the London Underground including the Kings Cross Fire of 1987. I suppose having to stick an old-style Metro ticket through the ticket barrier to unlock the turnstile mechanism isn't the most welcoming prospect when you're running away from a fire.

The terminals were kept to assist with crowd control.
