Probably not. Because then it would be seen as a joke, even if it isn't too funny for me, who has to face stereotyping like this from quite a few people.
I would still take some offence, how would you like it if someone said to you 'everyone from Ashington is scruffy, worse than most places'? I imagine you would take a bit of offence...as it's your home...
