A half-hourly service being maintained during the day into the night and on Sundays seems excessive to me, South Hylton - City Centre.

It does, the Sunday hourly service on the 8, isn't even busy, the money providing the 8X could be used else where.

What's the actual point of the 8X?

I'm not familiar with the South Hylton area, but does the 8 even cover a lot of the route the 8X covers within South Hylton?

The 8 doesn't serve The Golden Lion by the looks of it, and the 8X just seems to do its own route, but during the evening and on Sunday only.

The 8X is similar to the 8, but not exactly the same.

The 8 only goes round one housing estate and turns right onto Claxheugh Road in South Hylton, where it terminates. The 8X goes onto most of the streets in South Hylton and has a lot of reverse manoeuvres. Unlike the 8, as you quite rightly state, the 8X continues down the bank in South Hylton, eventually leading to The Golden Lion pub.

I think its main purpose serves to get the local residents of South Hylton home, after their trip to the pub on a night. It's quite a steep bank that isn't very well lit - and this area of Sunderland isn't exactly the most affluent, shall we say. It also provides the elderly residents of South Hylton with a door-to-door service with the local Metro station, when the 8 doesn't operate. The passenger numbers are pretty low (I used to try and have a ride of it every few months when I lived over that side of the water - the driver regularly rode around with no interior lights on, and would comment on me being his first passenger all night).

Under the proposed route, it would continue via the 8 route (presumably after its trip down to the pub) and provide a link to the City Centre (which the 8 and Metro does at the moment). I just don't think the demand is there for another service to South Hylton from the City Centre.

Couple of pretty shoddy shots below.

Thank you for that in-depth response, and I agree that the demand most likely isn't there, especially if the service doesn't get contracted to Stagecoach. Surely just running either the 8 as it is, or the 8X between South Hylton and Sunderland Docks would suffice.

I hadn't quite appreciated how much of an impact Stagecoach's introduction of an evening and Sunday service to South Hylton would have on the 8X service, either.

I went to South Hylton today and observed two inbound and outbound trips on the 8X - both were completely empty, with no passengers on-board at all. The one person I did see boarding a bus, was getting on the 8 service to the City Centre. That single passenger would have potentially used the 8X service historically, depending on where she was travelling to.

A better photo of the 8X below following my previous shoddy attempts a few years ago - although showing route number X8!

Wouldn't be surprised if the 8X is withdrawn, would seem better from a NEXUS point of view... i mean you can't even use the smartzone pass on it, so no the wonder it's not getting used!

Living near the end of the old route, I never saw a passenger on the bus, and passed it numerous times, I never understood why it ran, it did not go anywhere handy and expensive just to ride up the bank

Some fleet updates which took place a while back.
YX06 CTV has arrived in the fleet and is a reserve in the fleet for when YX09 EUD is off.

YJ08 PKU has left the fleet having been replaced by YX06 CTV.

SF56 DNY has reportedly been scrapped due to faults.

Compass are reportedly looking to get a newer fleet bus although that's all I know.

RE: Compass Community Transport
MX06 CTY was on the 939 again this morning with just a sheet of paper in the window showing the route. It's also a step entrance bus, they surely need to get an appropriate back up bus as YX06 CTV and YX09 EUD seem to be off the road all the time.

RE: Compass Community Transport
Fleet clear up thanks to driver for the information.
MX06 CPZ - Left the fleet
NX54 BXY and a few other Iveco minibuses have left the fleet.
YX06 CTV has now been entered into the reserve fleet for when YX09 EUD is off.
MX06 CTY remains in the fleet and was allocated to the 939 a few weeks ago.
S101 KNR has remained in the fleet and has not made an appearence in service YET.
The new bus is apparently on order still, starting to think they may loose there service in 2018 with service tenders.

RE: Compass Community Transport
MX06 CTY has replaced a broken YX09 EUD earlier on the 99. It also stayed on to do the 939 with a very tight squeeze, This is occuring a lot lately, surely there new proposed bus should arrive shortly.
