I reckon they should have had a 15 minute frequency from Hadrian Park to Heworth, then a 7-8 minute frequency Newcastle to Heworth. Would have eased pressure on the Versas.

At least they didn't go with the 'easy transfer to a bus to Newcastle from Gateshead' route

What good is a shiny new bus with wifi and next stop annoucements if we can't get on it in the first place, (because its full).
There were bendy buses passing me last christmas on the coast road not stopping until they reached sandyford road in town because they were jammed packed.
I remember when when the weather was bad, (maybe more people were using buses than taking the car, or maybe other services were affected), but on several days 2 bendy buses were running together, and both were very crowded.

I'll be based back in town over the coming weeks, for several days each week right up until new year, so I'll keep an eye on how they cope.

As already mentioned, they should have got geminis or something

If you're been sarcastic, I can't see avatar's on my iPad as I prefer the mobile site of NEB, the desktop version is far to cluttered!

My point was, been from Durham I don't know about Gateshead and any low bridges etc. so was simply asking if anyone knew why such a bizare decision may have been made. A lot of routes have been upgraded to Deckers from singles Ten, Red Arrows, Fab 56, Cobalt Clipper so why not the 58 when they've had bigger buses- the Bendys - Deckers seem like the logical replacements.

I wasn't being sarcastic, I was simply correcting my previous post. Smile I had thought the low bridges in Heworth would have caused a problem, but as Adam pointed out, he'd seen deckers work that route.

You really need to stop thinking everyone on this board is having a go at you.

I assume you mean the bridge on Colegate? It's not a low bridge. I honestly think Versas on the 58 will be a nightmare. They should re-route a 309/310 through Hadrian Park and up the frequency on the Newcastle to Heworth section.

While I do agree with what you're saying - is it not to make up for the loss of the other services on the Sunderland - Ryhope corridor? I appreciate it's got nothing on the Durham Road (Gateshead) corridor, but still is a pretty good one at that.

I think it's disgusting that North Tyneside (more so Wallsend area) doesn't have a service!

Not sure who makes these decisions, but there are some poor ones (again).

A town the size of Wallsend surely deserves a service?
It is certainly more populous than Herrington Burn, that will have 5 services an hour Huh

Are these just GNE services, Wallsend might be covered by Stagecoach.

Yeah! - I'd imagine the Coaster would have been busy? Serves several popular areas of North Tyneside. North Shields-Newcastle would probably be a more suitable option.

That's the thing.
Having a 'through' service would work. If people get on in Wallsend, fantastic.
If they don't, there will be passengers from points previous and beyond the point.

Fatfield is well served by three frequent services too!

Yep! - Boxing Day is more or less a similar day to a Sunday. Last week, a 1A was carrying a full load - I'd imagine it would be a similar story on a Boxing Day.

Yet just a few miles up the road from Wallsend, the Coast Road has the 58 and 309/310 running every 15 mins each.
Why not stick the 1 on, between Newcastle and North Shields to offer an alternative, but one which serves a bigger population?

Totally agree. I am lead to believe it is the same this year, all of the other services not listed by GNE are funded by Nexus.
