It doesn't have anything to do with competition, it's the lack of passengers on those routes.
If there was competition on those routes, there would be no need to subsidise them as the competitor would take over when one of them drops out.

Without knowing too much about the routes around that area, I will agree with what you said about the services not going anywhere useful. It seem to me like all these estate routes are just being tacked on to other similar routes rather than being integrated into ones that visit actual places.

Well the 335 has been cancelled by GCT... so very possible it is true.

The problem is the competition results in the lack of action by anyone which results in a network that never gets changed. If you didn't have GNE and Arriva both battling for the 308/309 you could use those buses and split them out at the coast and pick up other areas and potentially make the subsidised routes more profitable. Instead you've got 7 buses an hour doing one bus route with estates half a mile with nothing at all.

If you only had one operator you could start splitting them up a bit like the X45/46 does in Consett, X10/11 in Blyth or X21/22 in Bedlington and Ashington.

Realistically something like this for North of the Coast Road.

Route 1: 308 Bus Route (30 Mins)
Route 2: 309 Bus Route (30 Mins) - Combined 15 Minute Between South Beach -> North Tyneside Hospital
Route 3: 308 To Billy Mill -> Whitehouse Lane -> Devon Road -> Rake Lane -> Marsden -> Whitley (30 Mins)
Route 4: 309 To Cobalt -> 42/42A Route to New York -> Rake Lane -> Monkseaton -> Whitley Bay (30 Mins)

Extend the 51A from West Allotment to Whitley via the W1 route including the W3 part into the Estate.
Extend the 306 or 1 to Briardene (30 Mins)

That's all of Whitley's subsidised services in bus routes that actually take people places but it'll never happen when you have both GNE and Arriva competing and that's where you lose out. Plus you get loads of new links like Wellfield to Newcastle, Benton Asda and Shiremoor Metro, Monkseaton to Newcastle, Shiremoor, Benton Asda and Cobalt. Marsden and Whitehouse Lane / Devon Road to Newcastle, Silverlink and Rake Lane, Briardene to Tynemouth, Cullercoats and North Shields etc.

We wont know until more in depth info about the changes is given to us

With the chaages to services coming up in North Tyneside, i wonder if the first of the 10 reg Solo's will get withdrawn from Percy Main?, sure it was Dan who mentioned it somewhere, that they'll be the first Solo's to go.

Some of them sound awful.
Even without knowing the whole details of the changes, at least 2 can be withdrawn with the W1/W1A passing into GCT.

GCT have registered the 335 going to North Shields from the 22nd March - provides some good links for Hadrian Park, and also from North Shields to key business areas like Quorum.

However this pretty much confirms the 42 and 42A will be scrapped from North Shields - i’d say that’s a PVR reduction of 3 or 4 without looking. 
Looks like the 19 will also be scraped from Ashington to Northumberland Park, PVR reduction of 2.


GCT have also registered the 41 and 42/42A which i guess is evening and Sunday’s.

I believe the 11 PVR will increase by 1 as from what i’ve heard it’ll be serving Holy Cross.

What i would guess will happen, is the 40 and 41 will be every 15 minutes throughout the whole route, partially replacing the 42 and 42A?

Typical, services being spliced, therefore raising fares for customers!! Same happened in washington few years ago. Totally pointless and problematic

It’s quite poor, but I think Go North East tickets are going to be accepted on GCT operated 11,19,40,41 and 42/42A.

Probably any paper/app ticket i’d imagine.

Scrapping the 19 from Ashington to Northumberland Park seems odd - Ashington to Cramlington has always been the busiest section when I've travelled on the route, even more than the southern part! There aren't too many passengers in and around Seaton Delaval, so an extension of the 42 from Cramlington might make more sense (though irritatingly it would just add 2 to the PVR - Cramlington to Ashington is timetabled as taking 33 minutes so it would add 66 minutes to each run, when ideally you'd want under 60).

Do you think eventually they will just end up putting the 311 back into it's former guise (305) and extend it to Wallsend replacing the 41?

From the VOSA listing it seems like it's going to be every 30 minutes from Hadrian Park to Howdon only via Wallsend. The section from Howden to Hadrian Park the other way being scrapped altogether. There's also no mention of the 40 at all so suggests that it's not going to be a clockwise and anti-clockwise route anymore with the 11 going via Holycross to replace the 42/42A.

There isn't a registration for the 40? It's only the 41 and 42/42A? The 42/42A from Cobalt to North Shields is being replaced by the 335 (subsidised). There's no replacement Wallsend to Cobalt by the looks of it but with the 22 every 10 minutes it's not really worth it.

Hadrian Park - Battle Hill - High Farm - Wallsend - Holy Cross then a circular up Churchill Street, via Coniston Road, Ridley Avenue, Tynemouth Road and back to Churchill street (then reverse).

That would maintain the bus service on Coniston Road - which would be lost if the 41 and 42 are no longer going to serve it.

Then the 11 would remain the same.

Stagecoach's 22 extension basically. It's more frequent, less expensive and also goes more places. There's no reason to use the 40/41 if you lived close enough to get the 22. Now that they've lost the night time and evenings it's looking very bleak for them and will be the final nail in the coffin imo hence the 11 going into Holy Cross. It wouldn't surprise me if the 41 is gone altogther or only Wallsend to Hadrian Park in the next couple years.

I'm sure someone above mentioned that it was who also mentioned the 335 going to North Shields (which was right). Might have a different daytime timetable to the evening one like the 40/41 currently do (not doing the Wallsend loop).

What a shambles that 41 route is - so if you live in Holy Cross you can’t get to Tynemouth Road where the doctors etc. is - you can only get back.

Hopefully Nexus look into that.

Wow those changes are utter garbage
