APPEAL: Old Bus Photos
Hello everyone.

Behind the scenes we've been doing a lot of work on promoting our Bygone Era. We believe it's a fantastic resource, and would like more people to make use of it. Particularly in these unprecedented times where the Government are asking us to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives, we'd love to play our part in engaging with enthusiasts and keeping everyone entertained.

With that in mind, we've started using social media to automatically select random files, and, where possible, showing an appropriate photo to support this file. See example below:
https://twitter.com/NEBuses/status/1251588567882559488

This is driven by photos on Flickr added to the 'North East Buses' group (https://www.flickr.com/groups/nebuses/) or by the 'NEBuses' tag.

If the system detects a photo with the relevant words from the file description, it will be used in the social media post.

So, with that in mind, if anyone has (or can find) any old bus photos that would support files from the Bygone Era, please add them to our Flickr group, or tag them with 'NEBuses'.

Thanks a lot,
Dan.

I don't follow the social media feeds, however when I click on the link and look at the twitter feed, it appears there's a bit of a glitch.
The description doesn't seem to match the photo.
I've attached two examples.

I've noticed one particular twitter feed growing in popularity quite a bit recently.
Digging out photos and videos of yore.
Take a look at Tyne and Wear Transport Flashback (@TyneFlashback): https://twitter.com/TyneFlashback?s=09

No idea who is behind it, but they're attracting an increasing number of followers.
Without taking away anything they're doing, would what is being proposed here, simply dilute or detract from what is being done there?
There's only so many old pictures that can be looked at over the course of a day.
Could what you are proposing, be adapted to show more than just old pictures? There's the timetable resource plus much more in the forum and I think it would be a shame to not utilise those things which would make NEB stand out from the others.

Here’s my Flickr links to previous Go Northern / Go North East brands and services, not sure on dates as these were purchased from rallies.

The @TyneFlashback feed is good- I've followed it for a short while now.

There's a few major differences IMO -
  • Scope is North East as oppose to Tyne and Wear
  • The intention of the Bygone Era is an archive/library - @TyneFlashback is a social media feed
  • The sharing of content on social media is an optional - its @TyneFlashback's core product
  • The Bygone Era is much more than just photos, e.g. https://northeastbuses.co.uk/bygone/inde...eYear=1994
That isn't to take anything away from what @TyneFlashback (and others for that matter) are doing. Their stats speak for themselves.

Thanks! That seems to have worked - see below:

I agree.

I too have followed @TyneFlashback since its early inception, and really like their content. Their vast following in such a short period of time goes to show that there's a lot of appetite for historic content. We've been collating and sharing this content for a much longer period of time - years in fact - but we've never really been in a position where we've actively shared it. The Bygone Era is a great resource but nobody knows it exists, other than the regular users of this forum. The sharing of content on social media for us is nothing more than a promotional tool to raise awareness.

Thanks for clarifying the plans.
As an outsider looking in, it wouldn't appear to be the case.
The screen shots I attached (in my opinion) confirms that it looks like a social media feed, sharing photos of incorrectly labeled vehicles.

It doesn't sell anything of the site or the good things on it imo. If anything, it undersells it.

If you follow the links on the posts referenced in your screenshot, it is actually a timetable being shared in both instances, rather than being an incorrectly labelled bus. But this is a work in progress, and as with most things without a budget behind them, they need tweaking. Something we'll look at.

Doesn't that confirm that it's selling itself short?
I had no idea that the timetables would be showing for the GNE X22, when clicking on the image of a Northumbria vehicle.
There's nothing to indicate that at all. Nothing (amongst the sea of dross on social media) to make it stand out.

RE: APPEAL: Old Bus Photos
Are there any plans to get the wealth of content that used to be on the original Bygone era back online and available to view?  Some of the stuff that used to be on there was superb but has been missing for a good few years now.

Love the new look of the site by the way - much more modern

Thanks for the feedback - glad you like the new site.

We did lose some of the content when Brandon left us and we transitioned between the forum-based Bygone Era and the standalone feature. Any content that we could salvage should still be there I think? Let me know if there's anything in particular that you can recall was there previously and isn't now and I'll see if I can find it anywhere.

I'm sure there was a ton of old Busways and Go Ahead timetables/publicity stuff from the 80s and 90s - can't remember now if they were PDF or JPG.  none of that seems to be available now (or at least I cant find it if it is)
